Help - BB sharing.

The missus has moved into a student house and has ordered 600k NTL Broadband.

There's 3 others in the house who want to share her connex.

How do they do this? It's all BS to me since I only have one machine in the house which is connected to BB so I don't know what she needs.

Advice please.

If the setup is using a standard ethernet RJ-45 connector, then she will need to get hold of one of these to enable them to all share the connection but that would require a lot of cabling.

It may be an option going for a wireless solution to save running all the cables around the house, but of course it depends on the budget Lowe

being students they'd probably be ok with cables dangling everywhere - so you'd just need one of them (or possably cheaper - a separate router and just a 4-port 10baseT hub) and the cables (2 long, 2 short rj45 leads) and you're away

you can also do it with 2 NIC's in one of the PC's ( acting as a gateway running internet connection sharing ) 1 NIC goes to the BB modem , the other goes into the LAN.

then you only need a 10 meg hub ( if you are only wanting to share the broadband out )

should be doable for peanuts

That LinkSys router is a bit expensive, you can get one similar that does the same job for £35 ish from Ebuyer, your best and easiest bet.

I got my boardband hooked up to my main rig, which is hooked up to a network. Additionally, I've installed a copy of AnalogX's excellent (and free) Proxy... Just point the other rigs to that proxy address in their internet connection settings.

i had analogx proxy but it kept crashing and dissapearing, which meant loss of internet for all the people i was sharing with everytime

now i have a router

That's really unfortunate! I've been using one version or another of AnalogX Proxy for over 5 years and I've never had any problems.

Right, gonna order the Linksys router. What cables do they need connecting their machines to the router? Crossovers or straights?

Rule of thumb -

PC to PC = Crossover
PC's to Hubs = Straits
Hubs to Hubs = Crossover
Switch to Anything = Any

Thats another reason Switches are cool, you can use any type of cabling with them, and they don't mind.
