its due to the wireless connection
wireless is good for things where ping does not matter web surfing,e-mail,downloading but is poor in other tasks that require low ping speeds
i would recommend you move to a wired ethernet connection

    Actually he is wrong

Im using a 11mbps wireless router and a laptop *using wireless * and my ping in Counter strike is pretty much the same as it is on my desktop using Cat5 (network cable)

Also are you using a WEP Key as someone else might be connected to your wireless.

if someones jacking ur connection, theres no easy way to tell, apart from getting some sort of packet-inspection program to monitor the up/down streams when you think no1 is using the connection. i reckon u just put it on anyway and tell ur clientelle the WEP address so they can set it up themselves, even print off a wee sheet explaining how to do it maybe.

As for the wireless connection, wireless communication is very temporamental and signals can degrade for a variety of reasons, be it wall thickness, doors open/closed, stray AV signals being beamed about. I vote u save up and upgrade the B&B so that everyones got a wired connection to their room, that way theres no stray wireless signals for people to hog the bandwidth

from a B&B point of view, ppl would much rather turn up with a laptop and have wireless internet than have to dig out a network cable, from working at a conference centre, many ppl don't even bother carrying network cable with their laptops any more, they expect wireless (although that might just be americans!)
