    AOL Issues

    Hi!

I've been helping a neighbour sort out their computer woes. To my utter disgust he's running AOL Broadband and has been for several years. He's currently using a Netgear Wireless router to send the broadband up to his office. I've had noe experience with AOL though I've networked other ISPs many times. Currently you can only go online through AOLs browser and then your chances of visiting an MSN site are very low. IE works but only intermittently and only on certain sites we've also discovered that MSN Messenger doesn't seem to work either. Any help would be great!

You do NOT need to run the AOL software to use AOL broadband!!! I setup the girlfriends mum's PC on AOL BB and its fairly straightforward. Just assign a screen name to the router (full privileges) and away you go... Think you can login on the AOL homepage and setup the screen name from there (if not you will need the AOL software to do this part).

I had the same issue with msn not working on an AOL connection (for a friend before the flaming begins)

The best way to get round it is to change the MTU value on the router from 1500 to 1400 for some reason this seemed to work

    Hope this helps

Only difference between any normal ISP and AOL is the mtu which as Carlh states should be set to 1400.

    Username: screename@aol.com
Password: your normal password - no more than 8 characters

Ive had about a 90% success rate setting up AOL with routers, some connections refuse to be setup via (any make) router.

Something to do with authentication over domains on the aol network - as for sorting this issue - Ive been on for two hours with 'technical support' and the whole 'is it plugged in' blah blah blah routine - I got nowhere - said customers have now switched ISP's.

Yup, definitly an MTU issue, as Carlh and Rabs have said.

When I last set up AOL BB for a friend with their Netgear router, I was unable to find where to change the MTU on the router. Anyone know where the options hidden on a 834g?

In the end I just changed the MTU on their computers instead using Dr TCP. Did the trick!

I have an 834G router myself, the MTU option is under 'WAN Setup' on the left hand menu when you've logged in

Thanks for that, I will change that next time I'm round! Seems like an obvious place, I wonder how I missed that!?

Glad you got it sorted in the end RavenNight.

Just have a look on google

I had settings similar to this:

    http://forum.osnn.net/archive/index.php/t-3957.html

And now the internet works fine without the aol software etc, and i haven't seen quite as many problems as i did with using the aol software. I am on silver 1mb btw
