    here's the problem
i cant connect to any of the inbuilt services windows xp pro has i.e.remote desktop server, file and print services, internet information services ,etc

but i can connect to 3rd party stuff i.e. vnc,3rd party web servers(abyss, apache)telnet, ssh so on

i have tried disabling my firewalls on both machines and to no avail

the computer i am trying to is connected to the router over 100mbps lan
and the laptop i tried to access it with is on 54mbps wireless g lan
the router in between is a netgear v614v6 router with wpa encryption
and yes i have checked the workgroup settings

btw i am using sygate personal firewall on both of the machines windows firwall is disabled

Are you on a domain or a workgroup?

If you are on a domain, make sure to enter the domain name before the computer name, for instance:

    <LOCAL_DOMAIN_NAME>\<COMPUTER_NAME> (without the angle brackets)

If you are not on a domain, and you are just in a workgroup, you can try 2 things:

1.) Run the Network Setup Wizard on BOTH computers (in Control Pannel) and make sure you select the following things:

-- A.) "This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on this network" (router)
-- B.) Make sure you are using the same workgroup name (i.e.: MSHOME)
-- C.) Select "Turn File and Printer Sharing" ON.
-- D.) Finish the wizard and try to connect again using <WORKGROUP_NAME>\<COMPUTER_NAME>

2.) Connect not using names, but IP addresses by:

-- A.) Find out destination PC's IP address (START > RUN > "cmd" > "ipconfig")
-- B.) Just type that into the Remote Desktop connection dialog

I don't know how much help this is, but good luck anyway

Right click My Computer, then click Manage. Once in the console right click Computer Management (Local) and select Connect to another computer. Try the hostname first, if that doesn't work try the ip address.

If that doesn't work make sure you can ping both machines from the pther to ensure there's no firewalling issue.

Did you disable the Server service?
If 3rd party network services work okay then I doubt it's a routing/addressing or firewalling issue, so checking the services running would be my first port of call.
