    gigabit router or switch?

    any idea where to get them?

    ebay! nope, not being facetious. Got an awesome netgear for 25 quid, and very happy with it. Were 3 netgear on during the week I bought, plus some other makes.

    all the normal retailers have them - Dabs etc - and scan's cheapest is about 40 quid, IIRC. Edimax.

    Small Gb switches are not expensive anymore... 5 or 8 port versions are available from £40 to £50 + vat on Scan for example... Lots of newer routers also come with Gb switches built in now as well...

    I use a Netgear 834G router plugged into a Netgear 5 port gigabit switch - they look nice stood together on there stands (included with both). Been rock solid stable for 18 months + now.

    That depends what you are trying to do.

    If you want to copy huge files (video) between PCs on your LAN, then it will probably be a good thing, that way your hard drive becomes the bottleneck, not the network.

    If you want to reduce ping times when gaming, then I doubt it will have much effect.

    I use gigabit so that I don't NEED to copy video files between PCs, but can edit them from any machine.

    recent convert and very pleased
