Accessing computer from outside network

Hey guys,

Before I start I freely admit I have not searched for this! If someone wants to reply just with two or three words I could use as search terms I'm happy to dig myself I just don't know where to start..!

Here's what I would like to do. I currently Have an ADSL line, with a fixed IP address (eg: 86.165.3.20). I have a D-link DSL G604-T wireless router. One computer is hardwired in, there are two others wirelessly connecting (not that that should make any difference). They have all been assigned IP addresses eg: 192.168.10.1 rather than being assigned them automatically.

I would like to be able to remote desktop to my PC on the network, from an outside network (eg: my friend's house/place of work) - but I'm not sure HOW to do this, or even if it is possible!

Any help or prodding in the right direction, much appreciated.

Cheers,
Rich

Its possible , but it does depend on the level of security you want.

quick and dirty way ( if you have XP Pro on your PC)
- ensure that your Pc has a static internal IP.
- forward port 3389 from your router to the PC
- Enable Remote Desktop on your PC

connect to the remote PC with the RDP client built into windows.

Better Way:

-throw that nasty D-link router away
- buy a draytek 2600G
- configure the VPN server on the draytek
- connect to your home network over a PPTP VPN
- remote onto the machine of choice via RDP , or VNC or PCAnywhere , or (<insert your prefered remote control applicaiton here> )

First you need to allow remote desktop connections on your desktop, then forward port 3389 from your firewall/router to the LAN ip of your desktop. And allow RDP connections on your desktop firewall.

So simply... "86.165.3.20:3389" having forwarded the port would work a treat?

I wish i could afford the £125 solution..!

It'll work but make sure you have good strong passwords on your machine as its a little bit insecure.
