    telewest/cable modem users

I found something very usefull out yesterday. The ip of the motorola modem is 192.168.100.1 if your using the ethernet conenction to a router or pc, so you can access the web config at http://192.168.100.1/

There was nothing about this in the manual supplied with it and we have been having problems with high pings for a while. I found chaning the upload channel to 2 helps a lot now getting around 30 ping, before it was around 100-200 depending on time of day, which i think was on channel 3

Anyone know what the channel setting does? doesnt seem to change the upload bandwidth from a few tests ive done..

On the telewest cable network the upstream is split into different channels. Depending on the network of your local area, its usually broken up into 6x 5mbit upstream channels, or 3x 10mbit upstream channels. If 6, then you'll either have access to 1 to 3, and 4 to 6. If 3, all 3 accessable. Changing it in the modem just changes what channel it tunes into, for upstream use.

Anyway to cut to the chase, if upstream is even 70% utilized it can destroy pings and upload speeds, nevermind responsiveness of connection. Time to time, you'll find you will need to change upstream yourself, as the CMTS your connected to isnt balanced often.

When you phone up and complain about the contention problems a lot of people are having now since the 10mb upgrade they sometimes change your upstream for you for this very reason. I don't think they like you doing it yourself. The trouble is, if enough people complain in your area, and they all get moved onto the same upstream as you, you're back to square one and you have to change yours again. So it's a useful ip to know.

They can check usage their side on upstreams. Also they're not totally against it - otherwise they could enforce it at their terminating equipment level.
