Re-grade to MAX

I have recently (two weeks ago) re-graded my very stable and rock solid 2Meg ADSL with F2S for an up-to-8 Meg MAX.

It has been very unstable and very unreliable – at times absolutely horrible – and the Connection speed reported in my router has yo-yoed from 6 and a bit Meg to 4 Meg… currently at 4.576 Meg. I know they say that speeds will vary whilst BT do performance testing to determine the best error free speeds, but is this what every one who re-grades to MAX experienced, at times it was completely unusable, and can I look forward to it settling down soon? The 10 day testing period is now over (I hope)!

Is this the common re-grade experience?

Mine's similar TBH and its starting to wind me up. They should have worked out by now that the line isn't stable above 3.0MBps

Everyone is having the same problem.

It appears that everyone's line condition is not stable all day, like dip down to 512Kbps for a few minutes, then your router disconnects and reconnect at 6Mbps or something. That 512K could push people's BRAS profile down to 512K and stay!

And I think BT seperate Max and non-Max lines into seperate virtual circuits. Those Max lines are heavily contended for some unknown reason ?_? People download less in off-peak and download more in peak time?

Never rush ahead, especially for broadband. I'm staying on 2M because Zen don't have unlimited package @ 8M I NEED THE EXTRA UPSTREAM!

As an update I thought I would post that after 2 1/2 weeks of at times very poor connectivity my F2S MAX ADSL has now settled down at 4575 Kbps and has now been rock solid for over 60 hours…. So hopefully others will find the same stability after a regrade of pain.

Im also in the same way. I have only been up for 2 days but its all over the place. Im with Ace internet. Im on 1mb speeds today even though my line is syncing at the full 8128. So i think the whole thing is a joke tbh. Too unstable for the public and we are nothin but guinea pigs for BT.

Mine yoyod a bit when I first upgraded - but it's rock solid @ 8MBps right now. Strangley my ping times were initially very high too, but this has calmed down too.

arthurleung: I was on 2MBit Zen and upgraded to the 8MBit with them - you should probably note that you don't get clocked on uploads, just downloads.

During evenings my router will disconnect and have long 'pauses' where no data transfer occurs. I updated the router firmware (Netgeat DG834GT 110Mbps) and that seems to have happed the changes log noted "better compatibility/stability with ADSL Max" so maybe that's something people can try. It's bearable now - probably fakes out about 2 or 3 times a night so I just unplug/reconnect and wait a few minutes for it to settle down...but it's highly annoying.

I regraded from a solid 1mb connection to Max and was estimated I would see 3-4mb speeds, which I did for the first week, then slowly connection speeds dropped and now I am stuck on worse than 2mb speeds.
I'm with Nildram too but I think it's more of a BT problem than ISP.

My Max to 8.1 with Nildram has never been stable since I got it upgraded, but it always shows I connected at 8.1.. even if (like last night) I can lag to hell and back

I'm sticking with my 2mbit connection till all this gets sorted frankly - i've heard very little positive about DSL MAX

It will never change tbh. You move to a contention rate of 200:1. That willl never be completly stable to give you constand speeds. Its jsut not possible.

sssh ! id only installed CoD2 during the day, and havnt mastered the controls yet ;x but my lagging doesnt help ;x

Well I have remained stable for the past week with only a single router re-connect - and to be fair that was during a storm....

New subscribers don't get a choice to have the 'old' 2 meg service - as MAX is all that is available (at our end of the market).
