    I hate wireless

i do. i really, really hate wireless.

Just got a new 500gig NAS box that runs Slimserver for my Squeezeboxes. set it all up, transfered all my music on to it. great.

but i couldn't get it to stream to the SB reliably. My laptop has also been dropping off the router all afternoon. A couple of times it connected at 2.0Mbps even with 'excellent' signal strength. pah!

i've ended up taking my router and the NAS from the bedroom into the living room and running a cable to the SB (the bedroom one should be ok, i only use that for internet radio).

I think i've finally got it stable by changing the channel to 13, but took ages to find a clean one.

i hope 802.11n, or whatever the next standard is going to be, can handle busy network areas better than g can't

The 1/2mbs - "excellent signal" is a problem with Windows XP, the bane of my existence!

oh yeah, i'd got for copper every time, just not very practical if you want to move your laptop around (in bed right now )

i do intend to wire up my flat with about 12 runs of cable, but i have a list of work that is higher priority first.

Wired is definately better, but I'm quite fond of Wireless these days!

I have a Netgear DG834GT Router wired to my PC in my bedroom, I have another PC in the study in the opposite corner of the house, on the ground floor, and it gets great connectivity. Never drops out and gets a very good speed.
I have the XBOX360 in the main tv room and that's connected wirelessly too, I'm able to play on Live with absolutely no problems, download demos at 200kb/s (2mb connection), AND I can stream all my music and videos (even the HD clips) wirelessly without any problems at all.

I was wary when I set it up, but I gave it a go as I didn't fancy drilling holes through a new house. Never looked back.

So you would recommend the DG834GT then? I'm looking for a new router and would love a Draytek but they are out of my price range atm. So I'm left looking for the next best thing from a choice of many. If you get a chance feel free to list the pros/cons of the Netgear . Would be very grateful

I have the DG834G (no T) works well, when it works. but i don't think thats the routers fault, it's a noisy 2.4ghz area here. I replaced the stubby arial with a Edimax high gain arial from Scan. does help cut through the noise a bit, but can still be tempremental.

working as it all should today on channel 13, we'll see how long that lasts...

so do I. Theyre not good for gaming at all... but I dont really understand why not b/c technically speaking, they can carry way more internal thruput than the 1 to 4 Mbps of cable internet that theyre funneling down to.

it's probably got more to do with lag and ping times that bandwidth.

I know my adsl seemes faster when i connect with wires because pages load faster. but as long as wireless isn't having a wobbly, the download speeds aren't any different with it or wires.
