Damn this network!!!!
I mean, c'mon, I had it all didly when I was using ethernet... now I've switched to wireless and I can't get the thing going!
I've configured the cards to use an ad-hoc network... I've created a network which both cards can detect... then I've run the Network wizard and bugger all has happened.... neither PC knows the other one is there... nor can the client machine use the gateway machine's internet connection.
I've tried setting this up with Norton enabled and disabled... still no joy...
Any ideas?
-
can you ping either of the machines?
-
Nope... nudding, nadda, zilch, zero and zip...
I did ipconfig and got two different sets of numbers, with the client giving me the gateway machines IP too... when I had nroton on I used this to set Norton to not block that address, but it aint worked... but then again, it hasn't worked yet...
-
what are the IPs of the two machines? are they in the same range?
try setting the gateway machine to 192.168.0.01 and the other machines to 192.168.0.02 etc
-
Yeah, one was 1 and the other was 21... (that's the last 2 digits I mean... the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0)
Still less action here than a nun's knickers.
-
set the ssids up. even with ad hoc you need to do this iirc
-
Deckard, save yourself hours of hassle an get an Access Point.
I know networking inside out and back to front and still lost chunks of hair trying to get two wireless nics to talk to each other!
Both Machines on XP? Trying to use the old Zero configuration tool?
-
ok, gonna uninstall, then re-install, cos I can't find the ssids set up screen... though I did do it the first time around.
Jiff, I'd love to, but I can't afford one! :(
-
Make sure the Nic's CAN actually run in Ad-hoc. I spent half a day with one that won't!
Sometimes you have to manually select it in the NIC properties.
-
These ones can run ad-hoc, it even tells you how to do it in the manual that comes with them. Unfortunately, the set-up program provided by Linksys only runs under any OS other than XP as XP has support built in (according to the manual).
I did manage to get a network set-up which both cards could see, and at one point even connected to the net from the clinet machine.... then I re-booted and got nothing... nothing at all.
I tried re-running the Network Wizard... its seeing all the cards, it even creates a bridge between the wireless card in the gateway machine and the 5 port hub I have connected to it through another NIC in the same machine... which is loverly but doesn't help me connect the client machine...
-
stick with it dude.
some more setting info may help us be of more use.
In the past, when I've setup adhoc wireless equipment, I make a point of configuring it all and getting it up and running in the same room. Nothing worse than patching wireless performance (ie: a few too many walls, a metre too far out of range) hampering my attempts to diagnose whether it is a software issue or hardware issue.
I'm presuming Linksys has no how-to guides for adhoc setup under XP on their website ?

Well, I've got it up and running, but my god is it slow!
When the cards connect it says 54 Mbps, then drops to 1 Mbps when they actaully communicate.
I think I found the source of the problem being that I set up the network on the gateway machine with WEP enabled... even though I set a key for it which I entered on the client achine, it didn't work. So now all I've got to do is figure out how to speed this thing up and make it secure....
-
run a cable between em? ;)
-
do you really need a wireless connection, sounds like too much hassle to me :-/
-
so without WEP what is the speed like ?
I was passing your way this morning - If I'd known you where off I'd have dropped by ;-)
-
WEP is certainly desirable if possible. It is better than nothing at all.
How far away are the two machines/devices ? It may have dropped down in speed due to signal degrading (ie: too many walls), a common problem esp with the faster 54g stuff.
