Firmware Upgrade for my WRT54GS

Ok so I managed to get my hands on one of the WRT54GS V4 Linksys routers. I read a while back on here that you can flash the router with a third party firmware known as the DD-WRT.

I was just wondering, if I did flash it and didnt really like it too much is there anyway to revert back to the factory settings i.e. just by the reset switch at the back of the box? Or will that just reset the settings I have input.

Also anyone else that has used this firmware, can you tell me of your expieriences you have had with it i.e. was it good to use, was there better functionality than the original?

the only thing i really use it for is the QoS stuff. But you can revert to the original firmware quite easily, even if you manage to brick it while installing (which is incredibly unlikely)

So reverting back to the old firmware is just a case of pushing the reset button on the back of the router?

No you have to reflash it to Linksys firmware which you can get from Linksys website,

I use DD-wrt on both my WRT-54GS's and love it. Have my media centre & XBox hooked upto one which then wireless;y connects to the other router & rest of my network.

I used to use sveasoft firmware many moons ago, didn't bother resubscribing and then went back to standard Linksys stuff.

As far as I am aware, there were issues with sveasoft and the v4 WRT54 because it had a smaller onboard mem size I believe, however this may not apply to the DD-WRT variety

Yeah, you need to reflash. DD-WRT even works on the v5 ones now, albiet with much reduced functionality. I have a v4 that runs with no problems.

Theres quite a lot of v4 hardware still floating around, but it is possible to flash a v5 router, you just need to spend mayb 5£ building your own cable

Thats why you dont buy a G5 version, only G4 and below.

I have the ASUS Wl-500GX (same Broadcom chip) running Oleg's custom firmware (though I believe it also runs DD-WRT). Works great for me - haven't done much with it though. I don't really understand Linux!

DD-WRT is a great firmware, I use it to run my WRT54G as a wireless bridge. It's rock solid after a little tweaking.

The main problem is the WRT54G(S) pre v5 track old connections for 5 days which means Bittorrent absolutely kills them. See here for how to sort this (for DD-WRT at least, ignore the MTU and transmit crap as that's patently wrong. Just the startup script.).
