    Question WHAT Router?How To Setup?Is Wireless Dodgy/HiJackable?

    hi,
i need a router... thing is ive never had one before as never needed one... i know of brief ideas like when i plug it all in i use a webinterface to setup my login details?but what about the username and passwords in the actual router itself like the ones required to use it or am i talking rubbish
basically i have 2 pcs and a modded xbox running linux... so i guess thats 3 pcs 2 windows based 1 linux... (will this cause anyproblems?) i also have a pda (XDA2) which i will use wirelessly (hopefully if its secure which i here it isnt... ) and i want to basically be able to plug the pcs and xbox in and all share the net through the router... anyway i distrobution the bandwidth? or use a software program as i want to for example download an ISO through bit torrent and not have to worry if the other pc or xbox isnt recieving bandwidth cause the bit torrent app on 1 machine is laggin the others out...obviously i could limit the spds in the download progs but i dont really want to do this if the rest isnt being used on the other machines...i will want to use as much as pos if its not being leeched on other machines... i also want to use my pda with a wifi card and browse the net off it how secure is this?i could however just create a activesync connection and leech off the pc of choice and blag its bandwidth as ive done with bluetooth in the past.... i hear and know though that wireless is very sketchy people can just jack a unprotected connect or what ever and use their bandwidth? another thing will it be a problem using the 2 windows boxs and the linux box (xbox with gentoox or xedora etc) for access?will it create a conflict using the linux box with a windows setup?please do not get comfused because it is an xbox as ofcourse its just a linux based pc running a slightly modded linux distro so in theory same as a linux pc so how do i do this and what router do i want and how much and visa electron/paypal is a MUST so what equipment do i need? and what software needed if i have to limit the speeds individually?
cheers i know ive made a pigs ear explaining this but i'm tired lolz.
any feedback and advice is greatly appreciated

OK, from what I got out of that you want a router/switch/wireless box. These are extremely common, just look at your favorite (e-)store. You can then follow instructions typing an adress like 192.168.(0 or 1).1 and get to the config page. You can set the MAC adresses of your wireless devices to be the only ones allowed and set a WEP key so your network is secure. Hope that answers your main concerns.

Sorry AWM but neither method you've suggested is secure. MAC address filtering is good but a MAC address can easily be emulated using Linux. WEP is also as good as useless, it can be cracked in under four minutes by anyone with some knowhow. WPA is more secure, that cannot be 'number crunched' like WEP, WPA attacks rely on password dicitionaries. To really secure it you'd need to choose a truely obscure collection of numbers and letters.

The linux box should work fine, I regularly use Linux and Windows on different PCs connected to the same router.

As to the equipment, you'll need a Wireless router (ADSL or cable, depending on your connection) and then wireless adapters for anything else you want to attach. You can mix and match makes or just grab a bundle from someone like Scan. The top routers are from people like Draytek but they're pretty pricey. I'm a big fan of my Linksys but I've setup stuff with Netgear and D-Link kit and it all seems to work fine.
There are several programs out there that you can install on your indivisual machines to limit their bandwidth, do a google, you'll find a fair few.

There should be absoultely no problem with linux, so long as you get a router not a USB modem, and get the network settings right (not hard).

As for bandwith, I have found that bittorent tends to increase ping times for games especialy if it is maxed out. One soultion would be to limit the bandwith that bittorent uses, or to schedule it to only run at times when you are not gaming. Alternatively some router support Quality of Service extensions, that will give your outgoing gaming packets priority over bittorent packets.

While what you say is true, it needs to be looked at in the context of risk! Is the network going to be carrying highly sensitive data that will make it worth while conducting a directed attack at the network? Unless is it a corporate network - probably not. Is the network in a n area where there are lots of other networks (that may or may not have some protection. Is the physical location remote or in a built up area?

The analogy is a bit like the locks on your house security. I don't have bars at the windows but I do have window locxks and a reasonably good door lock - enough to deter a casual opportunistic burglar go elsewhere. If I had large amounts of cash (and that fact was known, then I'd probably have barred windows, a high tech alarm, a safe, and higher security locks.

For the majority of people, MAC address limiting, and WPA is probably sufficient - there are still enough unprotected networks to glom onto! (even WEP is probably sufficient for home use - but use at least 128 bits!) If not, then you are looking at either setting up a VPN from eacc wireless computer to the router, or setting up a radius server to handle authentication. Not worth it IMHO in a home environment!

Its also a good diea to check how busy the airwaves are near you. I helped a friend who couldn't get a signal because almost everyone else in his apartment block had a wireless setup and all the default channels were packed.

peterb hits the nail on the head. It all depends what you've got on the PCs and what your going to use it for. Changing wep from 64 bit to 128 bit makes very little difference to the time it takes to crack, I find that WPA is more secure and easier to remember and enter, there's no silly 26 digit code to type in everytime.

buy a wrt54gs (make sure its version 4 or less) install dd-wrt from www.dd-wrt.org. enable QoS and set the bittorent rule to bulk. WPA-PSK encryption on the wireless. All problems solved.

Buy it collect at store from pcworld, its a tenner cheaper than dabs, and you can check the serial number before you buy. The serial number prefixes are listed here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g#Hardware_revisions

That however is only the case if you have cable, but as you dont say, ill assume you do. If you have dsl you need a router with a built in modem, which i know nothing about as ive never had to buy one. Although if you have it from bt and theyve supplied you with a voyager router you can just plug the linksys one in and use it as an access point/switch and still get all the QoS stuff.

While my method is not bullet proof, I would like to defend it. First of all any security is a huge improvement. It will keep random people off, anyways why would you waste your time hacking a secured network when you can just enter any of the 5 unsecured ones hanging around. A MAC adress and the strongest security your device provides should be enough for that purpose. Also it is cheeper to wire as may fixed devices as possible instead of buying wifi cards for them.

Ive cracked (my own) wep network quite easily, it really is a matter of minutes (obviously depending on the amount of traffic) But if youre concerned about your neghbour leeching your bb its probably good enough when used in combination with mac filtering
