The best guide to NAT I've ever read...

...and I say that even though I've written one myself

Draytek, makers of reassuringly expensive (but good) routers, have made a video explaning how NAT works. It's not exactly in depth, but it covers the "how" bit that nobody ever tends to touch on.

That video is really cool. That's exactly what I thought was happening, but I'm glad somebody confirmed it in such a simple way since I'm a noob.

But... he said "rooter" instead of router lol

That was a great video, no real new information, but THE FUNNIEST explaination of NAT I've ever seen. Thanks for posting it.

In english you find a 'root' from a to b, much like a router does with packets of data. In US english they find 'rout's. So, if you're english, it's rooter, and if you're american, it's rouwta!

pity we don't sell draytek routers as work. ive lost count of how many customers ive spoken to and had to explain nat.

it would be a whole lot easier if they bought one of the draytek routers and didn't call me anyway

    Nah, rawter for the win!
I think it's the only American word I'm happy to use.

rout (n) - The act of defeating or the condition of being defeated

rout (v) - To win victory over, as in battle or competion

Make of that what you will!

a router's job is to route, i.e. direct traffic.. "rooter" is the proper pronouciation in this context, as a "rouwter" is a machine that cuts wood all fancy-like. US English is dumbed down English

Excellent, now I can direct people at work to that when they ask what a router is!

sorry but nat is what a firewall does. routing is what a router does

its just that in the case of most Internet connection the router is the firewall as well as the router

I think it's better to pronounce it router, not rooter. After all, it "routes" signals from one place to another, it doesn't "root" them. A "rooter" sounds like some gardening or landscaping machine, "rooting" around in the dirt.

I'm going to go root around in the dirt for a while with my rooter. Maybe I'll find a root.
