Angry What can i do to get BT to sort my broadband (lack off) problem?

Right, here's the deal - I am currently stuck on dial up. Technically, BT could supply me with broadband, but i can't get anywhere with them.

The problem is that i live in a rural area. All the exchanges in the area are ADSL enabled, but I am connected to an exchange that had 8+ miles of poor line between it and my house.

However, when an engineer came around to (unsuccesfully) get my broadband up and running, he told me that i was connected to the 'wrong' exchange. In fact, there is an ADSL enabled exchange just 2 miles away.

He put a request in to switch my line over to that exchange. It was refused and i was told it was due to 'technical' issues. The engineer told me that basically they turned it down because of the cost invloved in doing it, as i would probably mean physically moving my line. And that was that. Since then, they have refused to take it any futher.

So is there anything i can do to get BT soft this out?

In reality there is nothing you can do.

As long as the line is capable of voice communications and I think a modem connection over 9.6 kbps then that is their side of the equation sorted.

As such, the only real option is to move house (kiddin'), look for an alternative broadband source such as cable or even Satellite.

Does anyone know how expensive it is to set up satellite broadband, and if it is any good, i've been thinking about it for my parents for a while now. Also are there many providers around, i've only found one so far.

Edit: forget that just had a quick look and its > £1000 just for hardware and installation !!!

satellite is still quite expensive when you compare it with ADSL and don't forget that some satellite solutions still require you to use a dial-up for the upload, but the downstream is quite quick - but not useable at all for gaming etc due to the delays involved.

If you check the following list of suppliers they are not cheap

What about a 3G subscription. I think T-Mobile do an 'unlimited' package for about £60/month. Their fair use cap is 1Gb per month, which is not much compared with normal ADSL but should be better than dialup.

..providing you can find coverage? And if you're in anything but a major pop centre that's asking for a lot

I was stuck in countryside broadband free, and enjoying 384kbps vodafone 3g, which was literally unlimited unlimited - well they didn't complain at me clearing 10gb every month!

And then broadband kicked in, and jeesh was it nice

That's what I would suggest also.

    Mmmm, tell me about it.
A mate of mine in the army pays a HELL of a lot more for his 3G connection.
It's subject to T-Mobile's fair usage policy...which goes a bit overkill with it's IM ban, but whether they enforce this very strictly is another question...

As long as your not hammering BitComet, you should be alright.

On an aside, this army buddy, also uses Onspeed to reduce the amount of data transferred, especially useful when it switches into GPRS.

This really has worked wonders for him, so you may want to check out that too, for while you're still on dialup and whatever service you use after.

Not sure - probably best to try 150 and speak to someone in sales and then hit them (metaphorically!!!) with the details...

If I can find out more I'll post/pm you.
