Question Connection Problem on RJ45 - Help Pls.

Hi I am using a DLINK DSL G604T and the wireless keeps dropping out.

So I connected a cable (better for online play anyway). Anyway the cable connects to the router immeadiately and gets 100 Mbps. However, I cannot get out to the internet.

I have had this problem before on the same router on connecting the cable. It recently worked but after shutdown and start-up the next day it gets the same 100 Mbps but cannot get to the internet.

I use an ASUS A8N-E PCIE S939 NF4. Running Kaspersky.

Any ideas on how to solve this one please?

    Solved

DNS Settings would not work on Auto for the Ethernet connection. Changed them (help from Dlink support). And it now seems fine, for the moment atleast.

Sounds like a DHCP fault to me, did you try a new firmware for your router?

    Unhappy Computer says no

    It aint working again.

I have disabled Kaspersky and used DNS 4.2.2.2 & 4.2.2.3 as the pref and alternate. I get an appropriate IP address, although every now and then, more so recently, it has been giving me .3 .4 or .5 addresses with only 1 PC connected wirelessly.

I have only the hardware firewall running and while the status is connected and @ 100 Mbps, I cannot access the internet. I have tried different port on the router and also cabled laptop (which works fine). Firmware is uptodate.

Can anyone help with this - it seems that something is blocking at the PC end.

It wouldn't be your anti-virus anyway... keep your DNS servers DHCP assigned.
as administrator, hit Windows key+R, type "cmd" hit enter, and run "ipconfig /release", "ipconfig /renew", then "ipconfig /all" and paste that output here.

That looks all good, it's using your router as a DNS proxy, if you still have a problem with that I'm guessing that there's an IP address conflict, have you enabled WPA or some kind of wireless encryption on your router and wireless card?

In that case, there's a slight possiblity that you have a faulty router. I can't tell for sure without local access to your network. You could try running a linux livecd such as knoppix while having your computer connected to the router via a network cable, if the problem presists during normal operating in knoppix then this is likely the case (I'm assuming that you've had no problems with the NIC on your computer in the past).

Just boot the system in knoppix, web browse, download stuff like you normally would in windows, if you still have connection problems then the fault lies with the router or network card. Else, the problem is with windows and you might have to reinstall it.

On Knoppix now. Connected first time on Ethernet.

So could be Windows itself? Could be a Windows setting?

I really don't want to reload Windows and redo everything.

If it is a problem with Windows DHCP client, then it's gonna be (most likely) some obscure setting deep in the registry.. Unfortunatly most times, it's a lot less effort just reinstalling Windows than having to dig around google, and forums and trying to find the right key(s) to fix.

You could try un-installing the TCP/IP components and then re-installing them. (It has fixed the odd Win 2K problem for me)
