Why 8mb broadband line still only working at 2mb?

My BT 2mb line was upgarded on the 22nd June to a 8mb line. I have reset my router and it shows the connection as 8mb but when I test the line its only working to the capacity of 2mb. Has any1 else had this problem? Is there anything I can do? Please help!!

Who's your ISP? There's a 14 day "training" period where BT measure line stats and after that you should see the real speed. Or it could be that your ISP aren't aware that your line has been upgraded and are still providing you with the 2Mb connection that they think your line is capable of.

Contacted BT? They should be able to sort you out.

I've heard of USB modems being a limiting factor in connection speed too, but if you're using a router that evidently isn't the case here.

What you probably have is ADSL max which authough can go up to 8mb will just go to its highest stable speed (but should go over 2mb if u have a good connection)

My ISP, PlusNet have just suspended all MaxDSL upgrades for the 2nd time because of on-going problems the BT upgrade is causing.

    PlusNet said this week;

The roll-out of MaxDSL upgrades to our customers has resulted in an unprecedented amount of fault reports within our Customer Support Centre, as well as significant inconvenience for many upgraded customers. Reported faults following the upgrade have ranged between varying speeds and regular disconnections, through to no connection whatsoever. Of the ~60,000 upgrades processed so far, around 1 in every 10 has resulted in a connectivity issue where the affected customer has needed to contact our support team directly.
    and

We met with BT late last week regarding the high fault rates we have experienced, and have now reached the conclusion that currently the BT Max products, and specifically the process of DLM (Dynamic Line Management) is unstable and presents risks which make it inappropriate for us to continue upgrading customers to Max. Following the talks with BT, we have decided to temporarily place our upgrade programme on hold
So it looks as though MaxDSL problems may be around for a while yet?

I agree - i had upgraded to MAX 2 days after it was released and it took a while to get the connection stable and at a good speed.

I upgraded to MAX with F2S - was OK for a week, then rather unstable for about 2 weeks, and now is reasonably good.

Another friend has has a complete nightmare when upgrading to MAX from a stable 2 Meg link with F2S and cannot get any support response from F2S at all - until he cancelled that it!
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

Nildram is offering its customers 'free' downgrades back to 2Mbps ADSL as there are apparently so many problems with ADSLmax.

Contention ratio: 50:1 for most residential users. That means you are sharing your connection with up to 50 people, and you'll all be using the same connection. So one moment you get 3Meg the next 1.7, the next 2.2 etc

The further you are from your exchange the slower it'll be too. a stable 2mb is pretty good for a lot of people. If you lived next door to the exchange, had copper cable running the entire route (lots of houses are on an alloy, cheaper cable) and and had no one else in your neighbourhood on broadband, you might get close to 8meg. might

Next....certain ISP's are known for throttling certain ports, to prevent mammoth downloads to heavy users. So internet surfing is on one port, and runs fast, but downloads on another port are throttled.

Next, try plugging your router into your MASTER BT PLUG. It's notmally bigger than the rest, and near the point the BT Cable come into your house.

Unplug ALL other phone's in your house, to increase the quality of the signal, as all phones plugged in share a loop, unplugging them removes them from the loop.

Then try again. Speed test pages such as http://homepage.eircom.net/~leslie/testpage.htm are excellent for comparing. Keep using the Large Graphic test to compare the speed difference.

I'd say that, on the whole, over half of England can't get 8mb. It doesn't matter though...its a damn site faster than 512 ever was and THAT was soooo much better than 56k modems...and THAT kicked 28.8 in the ass!

Don't forget also that ADSL Max, even at 2mb, allows uploads of nearly twice as fast as ADSL normal ever was. 256kb/s went to nearly 512kb/s upload (you SENDIND data and emails, not receiving) and that makes gamingf way better.

I upgraded to 8mb the very first day it was possible, it took a month before my request was processed, when my upgrade was complete the only difference I could see was that it was now 1mb rather than 2!

This went on for a period of a few days, then I started getting 2mb with occasional bursts up to 4 or 5mb. After another 2 weeks it finally evened out at 5.5 - 6mb with an 8128k sync. I had a few disconnections over the period as well, but now 2 months later it is a steady 5.5 - 6mb with no disconnections. Was worth the pain, my ISP is Zen by the way.
