    Demon - an isolated case?

a few weeks ago i came home after a few days with the (ex) missus. and found my router to be synching (apologies for all misspellings) but not logging on and recieving an IP address from the demon server. afer a fewrestarts and plenty of swearing i called them up to see wha was wrong.

after going through general procedures, (how are you connecting? are you using wireless? (WTF!!!!????) please check username/password etc) i was told to change my username/pass to the BT testing ones. having no pen handy i attempted to put this info into my phone, failing misrably. but at the same time not really trying. then said id try it and call back with my results.

20 mins later i called back pen in hand (just in case!) and was going to say i must have written it down incorrectly. however the new "tech support" guy tells me straight away that my password is not being accepted. and there has been in there region of 5,000 failed logins by my account (and he says it like IV COMMITTED A CRIME). he then asks me to reset my passwod and asks the usual questions to make sure im me. NOW THE INTERESTING BIT

I ASK HIM TO CHANGE THE PASSWORD TO EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY, SPELL IT OUT FOR HIM, AND HE DOES IT. LO AND BEHOLD IM CONNECTED!!!!!

so what i want to know is - how the hell are demon corruping peoples passwords?

You may have a 'virus', your login details sound like that they have been intersepted, get 'HijackThis' (find forums about the result), use 'AdAware' and enable your SP2 security, particularly the firewall, (despite what tech geeks say the SP2 firewall is suffiecient). GET a PROPER VIRUS CHECKER, 'avg free' is good. Do a complete scan. Failing these steps, backup media files and my documents and reinstall XP.

If it is not the worse case scenario stated above then it may be that you have froogged up and not put in the correct password (its called user error). The internet password is not necessarily your email/windows password.

EDIT : Dont mention Keygens or suchlike on Hexus please

excuse me? a 'virus' eh? im using a adsl modem router. all login details are saved to the non-volitile memory on that device. which has a hardware firwall. to go along with antivir and adaware. windows fully updated. on every computer connected to it

nothing had been changed in 11 months, nothing needed to be changed, this was out of the blue.

user error? as in this error will allow me to connect (apart from very slowly at times) problem free for almost a year before becoming a problem? weirdest user error ever.

just to reiterate, the same password that did not work before calling tech suppourt worked after they reset it. it was IDENTICAL to the original password.

The broadband company may block a certain username due to infingments of thier user policy, the tech geek said that there was 5000 logins (if thats not a dramatic exageretion) then there HAS to be an automatic login 'virus' based thing executing.

On another diagnosis from the above paragraph, it may be that your contract expired and the broadband company did not tell you, did you have it on direct debits?

yes its on DD. and hadnt expired.

the 5000 failed logins were my router attempting to authenticate with Demons server. if it fails to do that it will wait a few minutes and try again. perfectly normal and not at all virus like.

Whats more likely is that The Demon box that authenticates the PPPoA accounts had a bit of a moment.

I'd suggest you get over it

Or maybe... just maybe... his router is configured to stay connected constantly and those 5000 or so failed logins was his router trying to (rightfully) reconnect to his account because some idiot screwed up the password file?

As to the OP. this kind of thing happens unfortunatly.. not much you can do but deal with the 'support' monkeys.
