Unhappy How hot is your router getting?!

My new 24mbit router has been strategically given to us since we migrated during summer. I think though my internet keeps cutting out because its getting so damn hot that it slightly scarred the wooden table it was on! I can't have it anywhere else, so what I did was mount it on two halfs of a heatsink like this...

    ============ (Router)
    ...[]................[]...
    (floor)

So in a way its got metallic heatsink feet. These get SO hot you can't touch them, and I find the internet has quite often cut out over the last few days....

Shouldn't it be a time for some sort of heat-tackling solution in routers? There probably are some in a few models out there, but all the ones I've owned don't - this doesnt even have vents at the top T_T... surely a little slow exhaust fan would help?

Anyone else getting routers melting through the floor?

Lol - my router is hot but not a firehazard - you sound like you need some router water cooling.

Mine was a bit toasty the other day so I knocked up an icy-flow (thanks to steves ideas) with a few additional splitters and stuck 2 x 80mm fans near it.

Routers should be able to run passively cooled, if it's been designed properly, but that's a sure fire way of sending and receiving corrupt packets and burning down the house, fusing the atomostphere and turning the earth into a firey furnis :/

My router and modem rarely goes above 30C

Mine gets really toasty in the summer, I keep a couple of big old cpu heatsinks on it this time of year now because I had one die a couple of years back from overheating.

Mines too hot to leave you hand on for more than a few seconds. Net cut outs are coaused by USB routers. Make sure you're using Ethernet.

If all else fails put a heavy piece of metal on top as a heat sink.

    Linky/pics anywhere Lee?
Router at works has a full metal case, and although it dissipates quite well, it's still too damn hot.
We've rolled in air-con just for the damn router, but the VPN can still be a bit flaky.
Think I'm gonna have to to a bodge-job on mine :S

My original NetGear DG824G started getting a bit flaky last Summer, and I saw lots of references to them getting hot when in their 'normal' position laying flat so I propped mine on it's thin edge and the problems went away. When I upgraded to a new DG824PN in January I found NetGear now actually supply feet to stand the unit just as I had rigged my old one..... I wonder why.....

I have a friend whos connection started getting unreliable, and so he aimed a cooling fan at it and the problem went away, so heat is an issue with these devices.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

Hmmmm, could well need a new router here then...

Can anyone recommend a VERY reliable ADSL Modem/router, preferably with VPN capabilities (not just pass-through) that isn't going to wilt in this heat?

    Cheers guys

The heat has been making our router play up something chronic, was dropping connection constantly last night, not been too bad tonight, though i did unplug it for a while earlier to let it cool down, it was soooo hot! it's on 24/7 it can't be healthy for the poor little bugger! still we've had our money's worth from it! £1.50 from the car boot sale over a year ago

My Westell could flatout both upstream and downstream 7/24 without problem. I was amazed how cool it is consider it was inside a tiny plastic case only (without any fan).

My old Solwise used to be in the 40's range (metal case) and can be unstable at high load

My cheap MSI router was scorching hot yesterday. By mid afternoon my wireless connection kept dropping out but the wired lan seemed fine.

Might be time to update to a Linksys WRT54GL-UK and use some 3rd party software to turn it into a vpn server. Maybe Sveasoft Talisman (v. cheap but I really dislike the way they block their talisman support forums unless you've already paid. You can't really make an informed purchase unless you can see the problems others are having with the software.)
