    PC-to-PC internet sharing

    I have 2 PC's.

Main PC to which my adsl usb modem is connected to is Win XP sp1. I have now a second system which is winXP sp2.. I bought a crossover cable to connect them pc-to-pc and try get internet access through pc 1 to pc 2..but it's not happening. I followed the wizard steps and it's not working. It just can't seem to see pc1. When it did.. it had a padlock icon on the connection.

    What could be the problem?

Get a hardware adsl router/modem as fairly cheap nowadays and give you a hardware firewall as well as the advantage of not having the PC with the modem on to access the internet.

I agree, routers w/ ADSL built in are stupidly cheap these days, they save a lot of messing around. Even if you move you can bring it with you.

Not throwing money at hardware - an investment surely, including the security benefits it brings too

Considering they're cheaper than a night on the town in most places, it's hardly throwing money about, and get years of practical use out of it, instead of a horrible headache in the morning.

I tried above it didn't work. I manually configuring both PC's IP to 192.168.0 2/3...

One of the things I noticed was I could ping PC2(XP with sp2) from the main pc(one without sp2), but not do it vice versa. basically I couldn't ping from new pc to other. I did tick properties main pc to share connection.

Also.. in network connections.. I have a modem icon, i have a lan icon. I tried sharing Lan connection but nothing. modem is usb that you get from broadband providers.

ISP provides dynamic IP.. so default gateway would change I guess.

erm... main pc should be 192.168.0.1, the gateway wont change as the 2nd pc will route its packets to the main pc which has internet access... have you definately got a crossover cable?

There is an alternative to the windows built in stuff. Try Analog x proxy its easy to setup, I used it a lot back in my dial up days. Install the software on the pc with internet access and select http proxy. Next you need to configure the browser on your 2nd pc by specifying proxy address (pc with the net connection) and port 6588.

If you are looking for web surfing it will work great.

Freeware download by the way. http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...work/proxy.htm

internet connecton sharing works by setting an interface on the "host" machine to 192.168.0.1, and running DHCP and NAT servers on it. Another machine connected correctly to that interface should automatically get online courtesy of the DHCP settings (i.e. "automatically obtain settings")

the first thing to do, is turn off ICS, reboot, turn it back on, reboot again. it's horribly fragile.just tick the "share this connection" box on your modem, and ensure that you don't touch any other settings.

on the "client" box, set that to automatically obtain settings, then plug it in via crossover. hit windows-r, type "cmd", enter, then "ping 192.168.0.1". if it pings, then you have a working network at the very least. if the network works, you *ought* to be fine for the net as well, courtesy of ICS. if it ever breaks, just turn it off & back on.
