    NTL and wireless

    Right.

my cousin in Glasgow has NTL TV and broadband. She also has a Blekin wireless AP she wants to connect to her cable model.

I tried to get them working last time i was down there but the AP couldn't get an internet address though the modem. The modem did show that there was a device connected to the ethernet port though.

i don't have the model numbers, but i'm sure this should work. If it was ADSL that would be easy, i know how it works, but i'm actually a little lost with Cable.

Does she need to get NTL to enable the ethernet port of the model or something?

any help appreciated. I'll be down there next weekend (not this one coming).

haha, i usually prefer working with ntl connections for configuring networks as its much easier to get them running than adsl ones

if its just a WAP it wont work on its own, you cant do anything without a router

or alternatively you could get a pc with dual ethernet ports and put the modem in one and the wireless in the other and share the connection to the wireless port, but youll have to have the computer on all the time for it to work

edit: adsl is no different either, the modems should both output standard ethernet

you know, i should have throught of that. I think it is just an AP and not a router. I actually forgot that you get ethernet cable/adsl modems that aren't also routers. I'm used to setting up either ADSL USB modems or all-in-one modem/router/AP boxes.

It's a shame she bought this ages ago (waaaay before i was asked to have a look at it), there will probably be no chance getting a refund on it.

    Update
I went into PC World on my way to Bearsden on Saturday (on the way back from Islay) and picked up a DLink wireless router. Set it all up yesterday morning without any problems. Although i think the NTL box might have a dodgy ethernet port. The plug isn't that firm in the socket. If it causes problems in the future i'll get her to badger NTL for a new one.

Turns out the Belkin one is a router as well. Didn't bother trying to get it working, just went for the Dlink, the software for it is much much better anyway.

Forgot to lift the Belkin router when i was there, but i don't think it'll go anywhere, can always get it next time.

it was the one at Breahead i went to. Had to go to Ikea (long story) so just popped across the road.

Was pleasantly surprised. It was listed on the shelf as £49.99, but came up as £39.99 on the till. A lot less than i thought it would be.

D-link routers are nice, they have good sofftware with them methinks.

PCWorld in braehead is alright too, although i once went in and started walking about, before realising i was actually in comet next door

Same company, just not as many PC's!

I've never used DLink boxes before, but have heard good things, and they are a good price.

The setup was pretty painless, standalone app running off the CD discovers the router and sets it up. Then you can get into the admin webserver to change everything later on. It didn't setup any security on the box even though i specified it in the setup app though. Not a big deal.

My cus tried to give me money for the box but i refused, got a hug instead. job done
