    8-port gigabit switch

Are they all much of a muchness, or are some better than others. It's destined for a home network, streaming TV recordings from an MCE HTPC to a couple of Media Centre Extenders (aka XBox360s). I'll also be using the network to transfer large files between my two video editing machines.

I've been looking into getting a gigabit switch as well but have been put off by the whole "Jumbo Frame" thing.

Apparently you get around 50% more throughput and 50% less cpu usage when using Jumbo Frames as apposed to the standard 1518 byte MTU.

I'm using this, the 5 port version. Works fine for home and is a cheap and cheerful device.

Looks a bit pap, i guess, more i-mac than network device

What about one of the classic blue Netgear ones - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/47407

Latest revision supports Jumbo Frames, not sure which one the ebuyer one is though.

I bought the 8-port version of this one, and found out that it doesn't support jumbo frames (I even asked 3Com about it). Good switch though if you're just after "normal" gigabit

SMC gigabit switches can manage jumbo frames as well, I was considering buying one, although they've stuck at £50 for ages...

I see, said the blind man to his deaf wife as he stuck his wooden leg out of the door to feel if it was raining.

This could be true of really poor CPU's and networking hardware, but I don't think you should get so hung up about this issue with modern hardware.

I'm using a D-Link DGS-1008D here, and have benched > 115 MB/s raw networking throughput, and > 80 MB/s actual file transfer throughput, without using its (9 KB) jumbo frames feature. I don't see how jumbo frames could materially help, and besides, not all my NICs support it equally, so I couldn't use it.

The Netgear GS108 also has 9 KB jumbo frame support if you're worried about it.

I think that all modern switches that claim "non blocking" in their specs and give an aggregate bandwidth figure that matches their port count are probably more than adequate for home networking. Jumbo frame support is also easily available.
