New Router for 8MB

Currently running a speedtouch 510v4 have put in to upgrade to 8mb (will come in at 5mb according to my exchange). have had the above for 2~3 years & not sure what the best units are.;(

Have just upgraded my firmware to Firmware v4.3.2.6 which is cool but as this product is now discontinued have no documentation telling me what the maximum adsl up/down now is.

Don't need wireless 2 main pc's being wired to router
Main requirements are:-

1) easily configurable firewall, this was probably the biggest weakness of the 510 no browser window but command line firewall up till last update.

2) Peer to peer friendly, have seen of some issues with certain netgear products.
current 510v4 does fine.

3) Network printer port would be nice though icing rather than a necessity.

Have seen these which may be reasonable & would welcome anyones views:-

Speedtouch 546 looks good saw ultim8um's Which router?

or

SpeedTouch 585 High Speed ADSL2+ Wireless Router is it worth paying the slight extra £5 for this rather than the 546 ??

or

D-Link DSL-524T 4-Port ADSL2/2+ Router

or

ZyXEL Prestige 660H ADSL Security Router

or

Linksys AG241 VPN ADSL2 Router

or whatever anyone thinks offers the best balance of features/futureproof for money.

You should also consider the NetGear DG834PN. I know you don't want wireless at the moment.... but it costs very little to have it, keep it switched off, and who knows - you may be very glad you have it available in the future.....?

I can thoroughly recommend the NetGear DG834PN, I have one and it is rock solid, I got one for my brother-in-law and he is very happy with it, and now three other people have got them based on my recommendation and all are very pleased. I have been running the DG835PN for about 6 months now. Everyone I know seems to be very plwase with it.

My DG835PN replaced a 2 1/2 year old DG834G - which is still alive and well and running another friend's home network.

Have seen the DG834G (WiFi) & DG834 from my service provider @ £62.28 & £49.35 respectively.

Have been put off netgear a bit by the issues shown here NETGEAR DG632 ADSL Modem Router I don't usually take much nnotice of buyers reviews but am either looking in wrong places 'cos i can't find much else (US reviews not being particularly pertiinent to uk operation ??)

Think i'm probably going speedtouch in the absence of anything else,. It does seem to be between the Speedtouch 546 & 585, not made me mind up yet.

The 546 does seem to have some extra features not present in the 585 :-

Just had an interesting e-mail from Speedtouch

your product is
fully compatible with the ADSl standard which means it will be able to
achieve 8 MBS as it is under perfect conditions.

Good luck with the speedtouch, the DG632 looks an unhappy beast, but I can only speak as I find, and the NetGear DG834PN has been a great piece of kit for me and 6 or 7 others that I know. I have taken up issues twice with NetGear Tech support, and have had good, competant responses.

There apear to be a number of other differences:-
546 has:-
1) vpn
2) voip

not:-
1) Content Filtering - Basic : URL white list/blacklist - Standard : Subscription based URL blocking using a network located URL database for URL classification. - Advanced : Standard Content Filtering augmented with a more granular manageability

I would suggest that it may be a good idea to choose a router which features a chipset which is most compatible with the DSLAM chipset as you're probably likely to have a higher speed as a result.

Have not really noticed chipset being shown in any particular specification
