    Nice new router

I need a new router for a new house. I have already had full wired networking installed so i wont skimp much on the router.

Im not wanting to spend loads on an enterprise grade one or anything but i want wireless N and mabe MIMO - but i actually have no idea what that does lol

I was thinking about this http://netgear.co.uk/extra/h_rangema...ter_dg834n.php

Had Netgear in the past and i like it so...

    Thanks!!!!!!!!

I can thoroughly recommend the NetGear DG834PN, I have one and it is rock solid, I got one for my brother-in-law and he is very happy with it, and now three other people have got them based on my recommendation and all are very pleased. I have been running the DG835PN for about 6 months now.

My DG835PN replaced a 2 1/2 year old DG834G - which is still alive and well and running another friend's home network.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

one of the best routers around is the WRT54GL good performance out of the box, and with custom firmware can rival a £1000 router

pre-n wireless technology is apprently very useless at the moment, i would steer clear of it.
Tomshardware has a couple of articles on it explaining why.

    http://tomshardware.co.uk/tomsnetwor..._tn/index.html

there are several articles on the page explaining what pre-n is all about

Agreed. I got one this week (you must get the GL model, not the G or GS) and put the dd-wrt vpn firmware on it and I now have a router that does QoS, Samba, runs an OpenVPn server, runs a PPTP server, and has some pretty cool access restriction settings. Very impressive. There's also the dd-wrt voip firmware which turns your £40 router into a SIP server.

All I have to do now is get my head around IPtables so I can tweak the inbuilt firewall to my liking.

That sounds intresting however would it have the same range as a mimo router, or a pre-N one as this is quite important??

The WRT54GL is a b/g wireless router. DD-wrt has the ability to increase the power of the aerials but I've read that isn't much good unless the receiver can do the same. Ie, it's like you on a hilltop with a megaphone, it doesn't mean you can hear the bloke at the bottom of the hill who's screaming back at you unless he's got a megaphone too.

Having said that, you can buy more powerful aerials, which is a better option to extend your wireless range (eg: http://allendale-hosting.co.uk/antenna/9dbi.htm - RP TNC connector £20 for 2 - don't know about your wireless card though. May be cheaper on ebay.). Most routers come with 1db or 2db aerials, if you swap them out for a couple of 9db aerials you'll have a much better range/stronger signal, 50% better they claim.

If i have a gigabit able network going into a gigbit switch and then going into a 10/100 switch router does that mean the that whole network is going to be working at 100 speed instead of 1000?

And therefore i need a gigabit enabled router?

Would I receive a big benefit in the likes of online gaming if I swapped my D834G for one of these? I also have one of these which boosts the range a bit.

No, if the computers are in the gigaE ports and they are set for gigaE speeds then they will run at gigaE speeds, any computers on the 10/100 side will run at 10/100 and of course any comunication from the 10/100 to the gigaE will run at 10/100 speeds.

Erm - the network has to go through the router right - and therefore if the router was only 10/100 enabled then the fastest speeds i could get would be 100 instead of the 1000 the rest of the network is able to connect at? And therefore i would need to get a 1000 enabled router??

The router would be connected to one port of your switch and it will have a max 100 connection for traffic, however all your pc's with gigabit cards in will talk to each other at 1000

afaik i havent found a adsl router with gigabit ports yet, but if i do i will post it here.

    Andy

Edit: I found one, but it doesnt have an adsl modem built in so you would have to purchase that seperately

So the only thing a gigabit router would do is allow up to gigabit internet speeds? Therefore i dont need it i guess?

Also what good switches should i be looking at???

    Thanks!!!!!

No it will not allow gigabit inet speeds just gigabit lan speeds

If the ports on the router are 10/100/1000 and the computers are the same they will work at 10/100/1000 speeds locally.

If the computers are 10/100 they will talk to the local lan at 10/100

if you have a router thats a 10/100 but then have a gigabit switch pluged in with the computers on the gig switch they will work at gig speeds, any computers on the 10/100 side will work at 10/100

The speed of you inet connection has nothing to do with your local lan speeds

    hope that makes sense....
