    Question Dead Network Card?

    Hi all,

I think a network card on my network has died. When I plug in a CAT 5 cable no lights come on. I have tried several new cables with no luck. I have also tried switching around the CAT 5 leads on the wall-box (2 connectors on each wall-box) and still have no luck. On the bottom right of the desktop the network icon reports that the network cable is unplugged. Device Manager reports that the network card is working properly with no conflicts. The OS of the machine (and all other machines) is Win 2K SP4. All other machines connect to the domain with no problems. All connections are plugged in on the switch.

    Any ideas?

Any help would be much appreciated

If the RJ45 socket is damaged, that would produce the symptoms you describe. Get hold of a cheap PCI card and try that?

Would the PC then loose the IP settings? Or would they still be there if a new card is installed?

if the IP settings have been configured for the onboard ethernet port, then adding in another ethernet pci card would require you to reconfigure the network settings to that ethernet port

Try another PC in the cat5 port mate, might be a pain to move it, but it will prove what is at fault
