windows2000 port forwarding...

ok, i am utterly confused as to what to do.

basically, i have a computer which is connected to the internet (via internal adsl modem).. and then is connected to a switch and a few more comps off that. the internet connection is shared and it all works fine..

however...

how can i make it so that i can setup remote desktop on my computer (ie the non-server computer) and be able to access my computer externally... i had a fiddle with the internet connection sharing stuff, and had a look at the 'services', i added port 3389 tcp & udp, but it doesnt help.. so what am i doing wrong, and what do i need to do?

You can get some software to put on your gateway PC that will give you the function of port forwarding I just cant remeber its name but the functionality you require is out there.

On the gateway PC, add port 3389 and in the "name or IP address of the computer hosting the service" put the name of the computer you want to access. Simple

The machine you're trying to port forward to has a static IP? And you're forwarding to that IP yes?

You don't need to type the IP of the machine.

If the PC you're trying to access has the network name "streetster" for example, then you put that in the "Name or IP of the computer..." in the ICS/ICF config and the port 3389.

So when you are out and about, you fire up the remote desktop software and type in the address box 10.12.13.14:3389 or whatever your IP is. I can't remember if you need to type the port or not, but anyway, whgen you connect, your gateway server will detect it, and think "hey according to my config these packets of data need to go to Streetster" and bingo.

sounds good, now need to find a victim to test this on dont want to give my IP out to any random geezers... not that its exceptionally hard to obtain..

its odd, it didnt work when i set it to the ip (192.168.0.2) yet when i gave it the hostname (streetster) it worked fine, good stuff
