NTL + MAC filtering policy + ICS

I'm a bit miffed that NTL do filter connections by MAC addresses, and they only allow a single MAC address at a time.

I was just wondering whether if I did get a WAP, can I just phone up and change the MAC address for my connection (to refer to the WAP instead) then just use that for my clients to connect to? I know some ISPs used to be iffy about any ICS going on at all.

    Cheers

can't you just plug the WAP into the modem so that NTL still see the modem's MAC?
That's what happens with my router.

Nah, I'm taking the ethernet cable out of my main system and plugging it straight into my laptop and it wasn't working and when I asked someone they said that it is filtered by MAC address. Either that or my network settings in Ubuntu are incorrect, I would've imagined the default setup is to retrieve an IP automatically though.

try rebooting the modem with the laptop attached.

NTL terms used to allow 4 PCs on 1 home connection

No probs, glad that you are sorted
Just remember to reboot the modem again when you switch connection back to your main PC.

longer term simpler solution is to get a router and then clone the MAC address (to copy whatever the modem is used to seeing) NTL won't know how many PCs or what their MAC addresses are.

Also you will be rather more secure from outside hackers Try www.GRC.com for some good insight into why you want protection.

If you don't want wireless there are a lot of competent routers going cheap nowadays

No need, works fine, and I'll only ever have one more MAC address registered to this connection which is when I can afford a router so all is okay
