Orange ISP
Asking this question on behalf of my cousin, who is also just about to move to a student house, looking for an internet connection.
She’s got a contract orange phone, which she pays £25/month for.
- She believes that if you ups her monthly contact to £30/month she will get a free 2meg broadband package, with free wireless modem/router.
- If this is true, it sounds like an absolute steal of deal, for a medium usage, 5-girl house without a wired network, requiring a fast internet connection to the there five laptops.
So bearing in mind i have done no research of my own on this, and im just posting on her behalf. (her names Amy btw, very nice person...)
- Two questions. Firstly is this true, and is the a hidden or undiscovered catch?
- Secondly, if anyone’s used or using them, what are orange like as an ISP?

As far as I'm aware this is true, but it's limited to 2gb a month, after which you have to pay, and I'm not sure what their rates are like.

It's true. Check out the Orange wesbite. I used Orange (and have done since their Freeserve years) and have never had any problems with them at all. I've used their broadband for nearly two years now and I'm still with them so they must be good! They do have a downloading cap as Lowe notes however I've often downloaded far more than 2Gb in a month and have never had any comeback. For the extra fiver it's probably well worth your pals time.

Right, so its deffornaly true, and there a half decent ISP. But theres a fairly stingy bandwidth cap.
So i guess that leads onto the question of, how much bandwidth do you need?
I cant see any of the beeing mega users, infact some of them apprently didnt even want internet as they dont think they will us it.
- However, there is five of them, and im sure in actall fact they will use it more than they think, and even just the odd largish .pdf file, and sending 5/6 photos over msn is going to add up when you start timesing it by five!
Any thoughts?

As I said the bandwith cap isn't rigoroulsy enforced so I wouldn't worry too much. I think for an extra fiver a month they should suck it and see!

My mother in law is on Orange. It used to be Wanadoo and prior to that was Freeserve. Had no trouble with it at all and the downtime is minimal. Only difficulty I experienced was when I tried to add a third PC to the box for the internet. First PC was wired direct, 2nd was with the wireless adapter you get with the package and the third I had to buy an additional wireless adapter.
I found that the wireless adapter I bought didn't connect to well to the livebox, I could browse the net and e-mail etc but I couldn't play Guild Wars with it or even download a new driver for my hardware. If I tried to do either of these 2 things the connection dropped. However you can buy extra wireless adapters directly from them, at least that way you know it will work.
I also discovered the other day that the hardware firewall built into the livebox can occasionally block sites that you may want to access. My mother in law couldn't get onto the Littlewoods catalogue and it turned out it was actually the livebox firewall ! Mind you it is easy enough to turn it off as you can log into the box and check the option to disable it if there is any probs.

Ok, thanks everyone.
- I think they should be ok with the bandwidth cap anyway, roughtly speaking atleast.
Ill forward the info on anyway.
Thanks all, Daniel.
