Can't access folders or printers from my laptop on network

I have just set my home network up for my PC and Laptop. I can share the internet connection but i can't seem to access any of my shared files or in fact setup a printer so my laptop can access it.

My network is as follows:

Main PC with USB connection to cable modem
Main PC with connection to scanner

Laptop connected via Crossover cable and ethernet adaptors

Both are running XP Home Edition and when i ran the 'create a network' wizard on my home PC it went through fine however on the laptop the wizard wouldn't run and i found i could just access the internet straight away

All help would be greatly appreciated as i need to transfer my files from my PC to me Lappy!!

have you set the printer up as being sharable?

there is a wizard in control panel to search for a network printer.

Yeh, but that don't seem to work either...i am more interested in the file sharing tbh

setup authorisations on each PC correctly?

Control Panel > Users > Guest Account > Turn On Guest Account

Nah, still not done anything...I can see the network active under My Network Places but cannot share folders or printers still

are you used to WInXP.
you can't share them like you can in win2k
you have to drag them to the "shared " folder
it's poo tbh

Incorrect DizMatt. You can share folders.
Tom, I dunno why it's not working for you Maybe some system service has been disabled

there's a "shared" folder? i've been using XP since 2001 and I've never used a "Shared" folder, I've always just right clicked on a folder & clicked Sharing, same as Windows 98...

Tbh, i have CD-R's for files, i can access the internet through the laptop...i will just leave it at that for now me thinks Next year i will be building a new PC so will look at doing a proper network then.

Have you got client for MS networks installed and activated?

Without that it wont work.

Client for MS networks - found in same box as "TCP/IP" (the one you click to set dynamic or static IP)

XP home......Oh yeah, turn of the stupid XP firewall. That thing gives me all sorts of headaches!

I always leave the firewall enabled for peace of mind, never have any problems
