Am I mental? Or just plain dumb? 8meg DSL.

Oh... stop it - be gentle

Ok so here's the thing - i'm looking around at the moment for an 8meg broadband provider. I don't really want a usage limit because i'm one of those _very_ evil people who downloads a heck of a lot (and I really mean that) - yes, yes, I'm going to hell for it but there you are

    So i've drawn up a shortlist so far.. and I can't quite believe who's on it.. It's a shortlist of E V I L !!!!

    1. AOL. Ye-gads! 8meg, no caps and 29.99 a month - they also do an offer atm where there's _NO_ minimum contract for transferring customers AND the first month is free. Tempting.

    2. BT. OMFG! But it's hard to ignore their BT Business Broadband product - 8meg and no caps for 29.99 a month. 12 month contract BUT you can bail within the first 3 months if you want to - thereafter you're locked in for the remainder of the contract.

    3. Newnet - £36.95 a month, 1 month contract, 100gig 'limit' but i'd probably 'hit that'

4.. Xifos - unlimited £42.89 a month, after 3 months no contractual obligations.

SO, come on then - are the first two utttttttttterly E V I L to the point where I should spend more on the latter options?

I use BT's business Broadband (Paid for by employer) and IIRC they say no limit but if you hit 100GB they boot ya

If its BT, it is hidden under the 'Fair usage policy' which they term to be 'excessive usage' ie 100gb or over.

I get moaned at for going 10-15gb over my cap, but then one month I did hit 138gb - trying linux for the first time, cba to order the cds

oh and AOL - avoid if you play any sort of gaming or run ping sensitive applications, as a lot of their traffic is routed through america

Thanks for the info - reading round BT's site their FUP seems to concern only 6pm-midnight monday to friday which is okay by me - i can schedule around this easily and I probably do the vast majority of my downloads in the morning or at weekends.. I don't game during the week at all and only light surf in this period.

AOL.. lol, just no. No minimum contract, but trying to end it, is harder than cutting your own arm off.

BT.. Solid service and the business broadband will be truly uncapped(if you schedule of course, BT is always fussy about peak times). 12month contract, so what? the chances of you not wanting internet next year are pretty slim tbh. Moving house is about the only time you'd cut your connection and then you just move the contract over.

Newnet.. Never heard of them, but their more expensive and limited so thats a no-no.

Xifos.. Look promising, they offer bonded lines too, which looks very interesting. no prices on that though.

Personally i'd go for BT or xifos. xifos if I wanted bonded ADSL, or just BT for virtue of having used them for a long time, with very few probs.

Thanks for the feedback - I can't believe i'm edging towards the cliff edge looking down at the beast that is BT.

I got lumped with BT broadband when I took over the line. It was a case of I could plug my PC in now and have broadband, or mess about for a while and then get broadband.

After a 6 month internet drought, there was only one choice I have to admit, I've had no trouble and only a couple of days downtime, when somone stuck a JCB through the phone lines.

I have BT Business (through employer) and it is rock solid.

Been over the 100gb limit and never heard anything, either they sent a polite mail to my employer or just ignored it as mostly it was 9-5 (off-peak) anyways....yes I managed around 200gb real work use.

Dont really use it for gaming however I know a few people at work who do and it is apparently great for pings and better than average for bittorrent.

Is that £29.99 excluding VAT? either way it is a good price.

From personal experience there is a world of difference between BT Home and BT Business products, thankfully.

In that case, there are plenty of other ISPs you could consider that offer either greatly increased off-peak limits (e.g. 300GB/month) or no limits.

This ADSLGuide thread has an excellent summary of what is on offer and is well worth reviewing.

Yup, i get good pings, usually less than 40ms in BF2 (just the game I notice it in most, because it's by the scores). Just one less thing I can blame my terrible play on now

Have you checked to see if you can get any LLU products? www.samknows.com is a good place to check for any non BT DSL options. You are more likely to get higher speeds and unlimited downloads.

Are you sure you can actually get a speed on MAX higher than what you are currently getting? The btadsl checker should be able to give you an idea, but dont take it as gospel.
