Is your router slowing your internet connection?

I have an asus WL-500g Deluxe wireless router, which although recommended by a few
Hexus users is a pile of steaming cack.

I have 4 Mbps NTL which hits 3.7 Mbps down consistantly with factory defaults on the
Adslguide.org.uk speed test. But if I use the NAT setting 'virtual server' to open a port
for bit comet (what for isnt really important as the program isnt even running)
the connection drops to under 2 Mbps more like 1.6 Mbps.

This also happens if i do it using port trigger as well.

Is this normal? do most routers do this? anyone any ideas about why this happens.

I have tried the lastest firmwares and older ones but the same thing happens.

Using a Draytek Vigor 2600, no such problems. Doesn't Bitcomet support UPnP anyways? I would imagine the router does too, so why not just use that?

with bit comet at least upnp doesnt work.

I have felt that there was always something not quite right with this router.
My old dlink one felt better (although i never opened ports on that one)

How about people with cheaper routers like d link, buffalo, linksys, belkin etc?

Especially does anyone with the same router have this problem?

Got a netgear RP614v3 here and BY 10mb and ports forwarded for torrents to my download PC. Speed is fine for me.... Only ever notice a lapse in internet speed on the rest of the network if I am torrenting at stupidly high kbs.. Damn my PrOn addiction!! lol!

Are you using the standard asus firmware?

If so you could always try the 3rd party dd-wrt firmware instead.

    http://www.dd-wrt.com

Check the wiki for installation and configuration settings for your router. There's a lot of useful info in the forum too.

Don't use bitComet. It creates huge amounts of excess data and half open connections. Get uTorrent or azerus, both have proper uPnP support too. So it may solve your problem, admittedly, by just avoiding it.

Otherwise bin the router and invest in something a bit better.

The problem is say in the future I need to open some ports for something else.

Ill have a go with the dd wrt and see if it changes anything.... I had a read of the forum
at the dd wrt site and it doesnt seem to improve things infact lots of its going slower type
posts. Ill give it a try though.

Anyone got the same router as me?

Nods - BitComet is a heap of crud next to uTorrent. Whoever is behind the latter is one very capable programmer IMHO as a vaguely capable one myself

I've been using uT as my main torrent program since early alphas and I've never had a single problem, not to mention it uses bugger all resources.

Don't have the same router, but I've got a cheap 3com office connect one (great for configuring just how you want it, port forwarding, dynamic dns web server etc.) and it's a cracker. Speed is now determined by contention/speed that sites can serve me - I've had over 6mbps through it before.

If your upstream is saturated by bittorrent (or a dodgy bittorrent implementation) then the ACK packets for your downloads might not be getting out in a prompt fashion, slowing your downloads... Shouldn't really happen, but it can.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

Again a hands up for uTorrent. I run it under WINE on a linux desktop and it works heaps better than Azureus. Not tried BitComet on it though, but uTorrent is beatifully functional and simple.

Don't forget it also supports ipblocking built in (ipfilter.dat) - just download the relevant ip block file from bluetack (Protowall people) and drop it to the right place.

There's a lot of cool stuff in dd-wrt.

I especially like the openvpn server and the pptp server.

QoS is a bit tricky though. If you use it remember only the Services Priority settings work, not the other options.

And don't forget to use these tweaks for p2p:
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Router_Slowdown

Which build did you go with, by the way?

The sp1 final from June works best for me on my Linksys router.

Others say the sp2 beta from 30/09/06 is better - though wds wouldn't work for me and QoS seemed a bit flakey.

You can also get the router's usb socket working with a bit of effort too.

bitComet is blocked by many places for abusing the tracker too and giving preference to other bitComet users.

Unfortunatly the affect of the dd wrt firmware is worse than the portforwarding problem, webpages keep timing out. I guess Ill have to off load this router onto some mug and get
    a better one.

So whos looking for a router then
