Suggestions Please: USB/PCI WiFi adapter and also WiFi Cable router

Hi,

Right, sorry about this post probably being one of a few thousand already about, but I'm in need of solving 2 issues at the moment.

Firstly, I am moving into a different student house this year that has a wireless setup, meaning I'm going to be in need of a device to make my PC wireless compatible. I guess I have two options, USB or a PCI card. I guess a PCI card will be better, but what should I go for? I have a budget for this for around say £20, and I'd prefer it to be as fast as possible as I may be doing a little bit of online gaming.

Also, I'm in need of a decent wireless router for back home for my Xbox 360 and also for the future. I'm in need of a Cable Router, and would like to spend ideally no more than £50 on that one.

Well, on scan (free delivery if you register, and make 3 posts a week), there are a couple, from the basic - here to the more deluxe - here with a variety inbetween - it really depends on what you want from the card. The second one could be especially useful if you have a limited number of pci slots available (USB Wifi Adapters are shockingly bad imho)

With the Cable Router - something like could be what you are looking for - dlink are a reputable brand, and that is good for the price

I use a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (you would need also a cable modem with RJ45 out) for my 360 & PC wireless. I installed the DD-WRT firmware which allowed me to up the output and it works great.

I got it for £30 second hand.

I also use the Belkin 54G usb wireless dongle and find the range very good. The other advantage is you can move it from PC to PC.

Got the kit yesterday, router was a piece of cake to install, I took a little while longer to set up my Xbox, only because I was being a total cretin and didn't select the WiFi connection

Installed the card in my PC fine along with the software, again, a painless job, worked first time, though will not be using the wireless for a bit until I move into my student house in a couple of weeks.

If you get any problems with the range then get yourself DD-WRT firmware
