Internet Connection transfering HUGE amount of bytes = slow internet connection!?

I have just wiped my whole PC using Killdisk and re-installed a few things, but the thing that's stood out is how slow the internet is!!
Before the re-install i had Zonealarm Pro for a firewall and AVG pro for an anti-virus, but now i have McAfee Security Suite, would this perhaps slow the internet down??
An example would be that atm i have been running the internet a total of around 17mins and the bytes transfered are:
Sent : over 693,000
Received : nearly 2,500,000
This is just ludacrous and probably to blame for the slow connection??
Is there anything i can do to speed up the internet connection and cut down this high number of bytes getting transfered?

EDIT : forgot to add that i VERY rarely am able to sign in to msn messenger and i think that it has something to do with this!

Its not windows update downloading a serious amount of updates automatically is it? Or another piece of software updating..?

If not, try doing a netstat -a in a command window to find out what active TCP/UDP connections you have. If you have loads that you dont recognise, chances are you may have a virus..

Whats you connection? adsl or cable? try rebooting your modem in either case to renew the IP as you may be being hit with TCP requests for the last holder of that IP.... (Long shot I know, but it has happened!)

Edit: Hang on 693,000 bytes = 677kb (ish), 2,500,000 bytes = 2441kb (ish) in 17mins thats not a lot of data. Basic Browsing could amount to this! I would investigate you connection, try www.broadbandspeedtest.co.uk and download and run the software..... Let us know your results!

Nope update is not on and neither is any program updating

Connection is adsl 512kbps....getting updated in next few weeks to 8mbs though

McAfee reports no viruses? and i only wiped my pc about 4 days ago and haven't downloaded anything that was dodgey though?

Done the netstat -a and got loadsssss of connections Though i can't really make sense of them if you could shed some light on this??

How do i go about rebooting the modem? Will i just uninstall the software and re-install?

Netstat is fine.... nothing out of the order there. Basically, thats connections that have been established then disconnected and ports/services that are open and listening.... Nothing to worry about..

As I said above, the amount of data transfered is not a lot and you could do that web browsing for 17 mins..

Do the speed test above or go to adslguide.org and do the speedtest there, let us know the results as this seems more like an ISP prob.

Do you have a usb modem or an ethernet router?

I use a USB modem, will run the other speedtest now, just need to install java.

Hmmm...... Pings are a bit high, and you have no packet loss.... Timeouts on server downloads which I get..... Strange..... I am wondering mow many hops between routers there are on your route to these servers....

What speed did it download and how long did it take?

I got 10 seconds and 278kb/s..... on 10mb Blueyonder. I will see if can find a 512kb test modem at work tomorrow and try the download again (I am a Network Engineer for Telewest, I don't just keep modems in my cupboard at home! lol)

Can you get any line stats from the modem software you have? Is there a microfilter in all of your phone sockets ithat have phones in, ncluding Sky box?

Adslguide speed test didnt work for me either! DOH!

The modem software i have is terrible and unreadable

There is only a microfilter for the phone/modem, and not sky!

Already have that, but the download took about 50secs with an average speed of around 58kb/s

I'm currently in the process of upgrading to Talk Talk 8mb internet and they are sending out a new modem which should be here within the next few days if that makes any difference, though the internet will not be ready for about another 3-4 weeks

McAfee can cause a little bit of network lag due to the firewall but it shouldn't make too much difference.

If your running XP Home/Pro Service Pack 2 - uninstall McAfee and use the windows firewall with AVG/Adaware/Spybot.

Talktalk send out 2 types of modem at the moment - the Sagem Fast 800 and Speedtouch 330 - in my opinion the ST330 is a much better modem of the two.

If you do have a speedtouch modem, download the generic drivers from www.speedtouch.co.uk - isp branded drivers tend to be a few revisions out of date.

Let us know how you get on.

PS: check what your modem is synced at using the coloured triangle if a Sagem, or 4 x coloured squares if ST330 - should be in your system tray.

I'm running McAfee Security Centre on my laptop - and most of my tests are in the green (individual servers had timed out). So that should eliminate McAfee from your investigations - unless its not installed properly.

I uninstalled the Mc Afee Security Suite and went back to the AVG pro and zonealarm pro...seems to be fine now...i don't know how your laptop could handle the mc afee yet my pc couldn't?

It has 3 green squares and one purple! Got a letter from talk talk saying that the internet will be set up latest on 11th october been waiting since end of july

Well i already have a speedtouch 330 yet talk talk kept going on and on saying that THEIR modem would be better to get just incase the one i currently have wasn't compatible (even mentioned what modem i had!!) so if the same one comes to me i'd be extremely pissed!

It wasn't as bad as you might think - along with a high res 15.4" widescreen (1680x1050), x1300, dvd-rw & XP Pro, it came to £941

Dell at the time were doing double memory & free delivery deals, so I kinda made the most of it
