Anyone used any fast (270mbps+) wireless kit? 802.11n?

Just wondered if anyone has any real-world experience of any of these super-fast wireless products like the Netgear 270mbps or the Dlink DIR-635 300mbps? Comments on Speed & Range would be apreciated.

I went for 54mpsg 802.11g when it arrived but backing up files to DVD over the wirless network is painfully slow. These 802.11n products claim to be faster than a base100 LAN so would represent a vast improvement.

Is it a bit early to be thinking about it, maybe I should wait until the technology has bedded in?

(The Netgear 5-in-1 is available as a bundle with Laptop card from Scan at £120)

I have some experience with the new pre-n stuff, one of my mates bought a router and compatible card. Based on the performance hes getting i'd say stick with 802.11g for now, then when the standard is finalised go for 802.11n.
Hes getting better performance than 802.11g, but not much better. So its not really worth the money, unless you're having problems with range on your current network, if this is the case then maybe it is worth getting a cheapish pre-n router for the moment.

Hes using a NETGEAR WNR834B RangeMax, if that helps

run a length of ethernet cable temporarily while you do the backup?

I wouldn't even be surprised if it was quicker to copy everything to a removable drive then copy again onto the remote system. I know iæve done this in the past with my little NAS box. Was quicker to copy a bunch of albums ripped to FLAC files to a USB drive then attach it to my NAS and use the inbuilt file manager utility to copy them to the internel drive, than it was to transfer them from my laptop wirelessly. And that is with a full (Excellent) signal and only about 12ft of clear space between the laptop and router.

Exactly what I'm having to do, although my daughter finds the lovely yellow cable impossible to resist and my girlfriend continually asks when it's going to be moved.

Sounds like I'll be sticking with my 11g for now while I wait for all the early adopters to iron out the problems.

BTW. Today I noticed computer shopper were doing a big review of wireless boxes incl. some of the 11n, they didn't exactly seem blown away either.

    Thanks all for the feedback
