    internet woes

right this is a long tricky question.

basically i am on a pipex connection with a BT phone line. recently i have had a problem of getting randomly disconnected to my internet, so i have called pipex endlessly and today an engineer finally came out and looked at the line (tested it) my adsl wire failed the test as did the spliter. but the line was solid at the speeds he tested it at. the max was 4MB but this will be unlikly to obtain without being interuppted so he said we should be able to get a stable 2.2mb line.

and today i realised my route and modem (belkin ADSL wireless G) was made for an NTL line etc. so i bought a net gear wireless modem etc and am now on the wireless using a wireless USB pen.

i have also replaced the adsl cable with a shorter newer one. and a new spliter.

so i think i have eliminated the random cut outs etc etc, now what i am unsure on is why my speed changes from 1.5mb to 2.6 etc its just not sitting at one standard speed. i have been using a BT whole sale IP to test my speed and its up and down like a yo yo

to test how quick my connection is. So now that i know my BT line is fine , what options do i have left?

any suggestions help etc please help

    thank you very much

Most ISPs have upgraded their customers to BT ADSL Max which is up to 8Mbps. depends on the condition of your line, your sync speed (and your download speed) will change from day to day, as the strength of interference from the atmosphere / your neighbour turning on his ADSL modem / people using radio broadcast equipments will change your line's single quality.

It won't ever stay at a constant speed (unless you're extremely close to the adsl exchange and always sync at top speed)

cheers arthuleung , well i am stuck for what to do, my interleaving is "on" and that upsets my games online (my primary use for the internet) and basically im on a 10month contract with pipex , so if i quit them i need to pay the remainder !!!!

seems as though my line isnt close to the exchange and isnt syncing correctly, due to slow speeds all the time. lag in everygame.

i was reading that a NTE5 face plate can help with adsl max.

and i heard that a usb modem such as speadtouch has the ability to change SNR ratings? can my netgear do this? if so how?

NTE5 is just a master socket, easy way to tell if you have one is if you main socket has 2 parts, ie top half is blank and boring (prob with BT on it) bottom half has the socket for your phone.

Most residential customers have an NTE5 as it is the only type that allows a customer to add his own extensions due to the removable faceplate.

If you doubt your internel wiring, undo the 2 screws on your master and remove the faceplate, behind there is a standard phone jack, plug your modem in there and check the speeds again. This should eliminate all internal wiring/extensions in your house.

If your slow speeds query is regarding Online Gaming and are getting high pings to the game

server the first port of call should be ‘tracert’. This is a program which traces the route

that TCP packets from your computer take to get to the game server and what sort of times they

are getting from each of the ‘hops’. These ‘hops’ are the routers that are handling your packets

as they make their way to and from the game server to you. At times you may see log delays or even the ‘*’ which represents the program inability to get a time reading from that router.

this was sent today, any idea as to what there trying to tell me?

Are you getting slow speeds via a wired connection, wireless or both?

Also as for the tracert open a command prompt (start>run>cmd [enter]) and type stracert www.google.co.uk then press enter. Post the results here and we'll see what we can make of it.

EDIT - also is it possible to ask Pipex to reduce your linespeed? This may increase stability.
