    A guide to Download Amounts

    Hi guys,

I've seen a lot of people fretting over just how much of their limit they're gonna need.

I'm on Zen and with Zen you get 20 gig per month. Luckily , with Zen, you get a an online Pie Chart

I'm genuinely worried that you guys think you're gonna use more than you really are!

SO HERE'S MINE with useage descriptions
    ---------------------
Hexus all day, everyday (check my post count) , along with review sites, hardware sites, and gaming sites.

Lineage 2 gaming: 5 nights of the week from 9pm until midnight for TWO players, plus at least 5 hours per weekend, for two player, plus 1 hour everylunchtime when I'm working from home.

    IL-2 Gaming about 30 hours per month, 1 or 2 PC's.

Working from home: Laptop for VPN into head office, about 5 hours per day, 5 days per weeks.

Email for 2 people, with 5 email accounts between us

Skype for both of us, while playing Lineage2 all the time (use instead of teamspeak as my mates confident with Skype and not TS) plus Skype calls everynight.

More spam arriving than you can shake a stick at.

3 large (20ish mb) files downloaded per week for work, plus Microsoft updates for 2 home PC's plus work laptop.

Ebay accounts, with constant monitoring and selling/buying, (220 items in 7 months), so a lot per month.

Downloading new drivers for graphics cards every month.
    Downloading patches for Lineage everymonth.

and THIS MONTH, 2 PC@s getting the new entire update patch for Lineage2 (massive slow downloads overnight)

    Result so far in September?

Please guys...stop fretting. Unless you're downloading a lot of films (!) you just wont use the bandwidth!

In essence, I hope this helps people to realise that gaming is NOT a high overhead...nor is Skype. Normal heavy internet useage (ie me) hunfreds of hours of surfing AND gaming AND skype AND email AND Ebay selling....

20gb is not really a great amount imo. Some Xbox 360 demos are over 1gb a throw and there are normal a few demos a week to try, not all over 1gb I know. With "my" normal usage I normally do 35-45gb a month. Good job I get a 50gb a month limit on peak and no limit off.

Why are so many people panicing about how much they use atm?

I have unlimited thankfully. However if I am downloading large files like major updates for games all my ISP request is that I do it over night so you arn't hogging to much bandwidth during the peak daytime hours.

If you log into your account online most providers actually have some sort of usage checker. Mine shows how much you use over a few days as it lists dates on the left and usage etc on the right.

When I was playing Guild Wars one hell of a lot last year I was barely hitting my 4Gb usage I had then per month.

If you want to keep games updated, do it manually and download patches, drivers etc before you hit the sack. Granted this is not always possible on some games. But on the MMORPG's and Half Life with CSS you can easily log onto the game or Steam and set it away late at night ready for use the following day.

Like Zak mentioned 20 Gb is more than enough each month unless you are downloading with programs like Bitorrent where it uploads as well as downloads. If you do use a program like that I would suggest getting an unlimited ISP.

Peronsally, I know I get through 50-80gig a month easily, but most people are completly oversold on their broadband packages.

The most I've ever got through in a month is 27GB, that's with 3 computers, doing quite a lot of downloads, and a fair amount of RDP usage to my webserver, and plenty of gaming (which actually uses bugger all).

I have no idea what you guys using way in excess of 50 gigs are doing..

that's what worries me.....the sheer bulk of downloaded garbage.

I'd love to see how many people know whats running on their PC at any one time!

All those trojans, spywares, data capture programs, etc!

Or is it just film downloads?

Just wait and see how well 20gig a month serves people once IPTV products launch later this year - it's suddenly not going to see quite as liberal I think.
Work out just how long it takes to download 20gigs worth with an 8mbit connection - easily done.

I'm unlimited and i'm staying that way - and i don't mind paying a premium for it either as I get (very) good use out of it. And when I say 'unlimited' I mean in the true sense of the word, not in the marketing spin of most ISPs (something I find very questionable).

I wish more ISP's did a net monitor like that. Im with Pipex thinking of leaving cause i want max but not a 12 month contract but not sure how much i download the cynic in me says that most dont so they can charge you more for the extra GBs you download. Ill have to look at netlimiter and see what the craic is

    Permanently confused

For me it is mostly films/TV shows and some music. I have no P2P stuff on my computer at all, I use only newsgroups.

I don't mind paying a higher price for an ISP which allows unlimited downloads or has a huge limit. I would not want to live each month thinking to myself, oh can I download that demo, will I have enough of my limit left at the end of the month.
