I have 3 windows xp machines in a simple wired ethernet network. One of the machines shares are not working correctly, and are not visible by the other two machines present. Need some help with this one.

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

You want the 'node type' to read 'hybrid'

I don't think this is the solution. I can see the machine in the workgroup, I just can't acess its shares.

Sounds like a problem with the file permissions perhaps? You may have the security settings set so that the share can only be seen by the local account.
File permissions are fine.

I assume you're using a Workgroup rather than a Domain. Have you checked that 'Everyone' has read and write access to the shares in the Security tab?
You do not need set local security permissions, just the network share permissions for 'Everyone'.
Besides I have solved it. CP > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > User Rights Assignment. The 'Guest' account had been added to the 'Deny access to this computer from the network' security setting. Not by me I might add.

So it was a security permissions problem. If you have access to secpol then I guess you aren't running XP Home (though you didn't bother to say), so you really don't need Simple File Sharing. I just hope you have a decent firewall so your shares aren't open to the rest of the net.
There wouldn't be a security tab if I was running Home

seriously yamangman go to start > run then type 'ipconfig /all' and tell me what it says for node type.
i had the same problem despite activating shares and being in the same workgroup and it was down to this farcical node type.
