    Router nobbled by storm? RMA?

    Since we had a storm yesterday morning, my WL500G will not pick up a connection from my cable modem. The "power" and "air" lights are on, and each LAN port lights up when I stick a cable in it. However the WAN light (and hence port) seem completely dead. I can connect to the router itself and access the status page, which lists the WAN as disconnected, and will not reconnect when I click the appropriate button. I've rest the router a couple of times, checked the firewall etc, all with no joy, the connection to the modem appears to be physically dead.

    I've contacted Scan customer services to enquire about returning the router (warranty expires on 20/11), but was wondering if there's anything else I can try in the meantime.

    doe sthe modem work? plug a pc straight into it, if you get a connection the wan port has died, but id be surprised if a surge could get through to the router and not balls up the modem first.

    I can connect to the modem directly using a cable and get online. I've had two occasions in the past where the NIC has taken the fall of a lighting strike, so I kow the general symptoms. From my experience, NICs and simliar technology tend to be vulnerable to electrical surges. I've got the connection going with a new ethernet cable, but I reckon the net connection is a no go.

    Local lightning strike did exactly that to my old router a couple of months back, not the sort of thing a warranty usually covers.

    I would be surprised if the warenty covered a power surge caused by lightening strike in a storm.... but if Scan do replace it then that is wonderful Customer Service from Scan and would make me order pretty much eveything I could from them!

    My router died a few months back as well due to a lightning strike and although the power brick was plugged into two surge protectors the telephone cable wasn't. It also fried the network port on my motherboard.

    I got a replacement from 3com by just reporting that it was no longer working and did not give a possible reason why. It was only 6 months old and so 3com shipped a brand new unit out to me (from Germany) within 3 days!

    I have now bought some Belkin surge protectors that include telephone cable protection as well, don't want my nice new Core 2 Duo to suffer the same fate...

    Are there similar products that protect cable internet? I get my broadband jolliness from ntl. Not had a reply from Scan yet, will see if anything turns up tomorrow.
