help needed - slow downloads on network

    hey,
we have a network the router is 54Mbps and our internet connection from NTL is 4Mb. Anyway one of the pc's attached to the network is brand new and it is not reaching its full capacities as far as internet speed is concerned.

Getting downloads of no more than 60k/b a sec and problems with streaming low quality music (this is all when no one else is connected to the network) I think its to do with the PC being new and something needing to be configured however i have already configured the firewalls to allow the download but yeah anyone know what it might be

theres no virus or hardare issues i dont think unless a 54MBps router won't bring out the full speed of a 4Mb connection any help?

Have you carried out a speed test with a third party such as this to show both upload/download and ping times?

I take it you always get 60Kbps download but have you been on the 4Mbps for long also?

It gave download of 3561 kbps. Upload of 247 kbps and ping of 13 ms. Is this normal? As it is seeming to work fine but streaming music is really poor and any downloads I try and make seem to go very slow and slow down my internet a lot.

The other PC up here was getting way over 100 kbps also. Is there anything on my system that may need configuring with it being brand new?

Do you have the same wireless card in boths pcs? - if different, try swapping them to see if the performance issue moves with the waireless card?

I have alsways found USB adapters to be not as good as PC Card or PCIA Adapters in terms of range, reliability or performance... have you swapped the USB adaptors over - in case one performs better than the other? Are bouth machines same USB (1.1 or 2.0)?.

Yes USB 2.0 and we used exactly the same adaptor on both machines. It was weird though as last night I was downloading off a site at 460kb/s and I used BitComet and was only getting 100 kb/s and can't seem to get over this. We use BitComet to transfer our bands songs across to other band members when they are away at uni and it normally works fine. It is very strange but maybe it isn't down to the PC and just network traffic at the times we use it.

Seems 'normal' but I suspect your 'connection' for Bitcomet is being 'throttled' by the ISP with Packeteer or similar, i.e. restrictions on download/upload speed for certain ports.

Have you contacted your ISP or looked at their FUP?

Everythign seems to be in order now it's just slow downloads on bit comet really, like we can download off a website at 400kb so we haven't violated any FUP it would seem...yet so i don't think it can be that

Almost certainly some kind of traffic shaping/packet filtering going on. Who's the ISP?

    See this!

    Just a snippet from it:

"...In addition, we reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to manage all traffic and traffic types on our data network to ensure a consistent and optimal service for all our Broadband customers. At peak times (normally 6pm to 11pm), we may therefore limit the bandwidth available to less time-sensitive traffic types, in particular peer to peer traffic, or in extreme circumstances, where network congestion leads to potential denial of service for some customers, to reduce bandwidth allocations at an individual or a network level, in order to maintain a consistent quality of service for all customers. These restrictions do not apply outside of peak hours...

Think that should clear up this thread.
