Should I change my DSL provider, am I being ripped off by Pipex?

    Hi all,

Ever since I moved into this house (Dec 04), I've been using Pipex for my DSL. Back then, I signed up for a 2mb Unlimited package for £33.99 and I'm still on that same package today.

Looking around the web, it appears that a lot of providers are now offering higher speeds at lower prices. Even Pipex themselves offer higher speeds at lower prices than what I currently pay.

I have in recent times noticed that Pipex do throttle my speeds on certain programs which is a shame as I really don't download much.

I really would have liked to have joined Sky Broadband as I'm a Sky customer and the savings would have been a great bonus. Unfortunately, it's not available from my exchange. In fact, not much is. My only option is DSL and even that only came here in Nov 04, a month before I moved into the village.

I am an Orange phone customer, I've noticed they offer free broadband if I upped my contract a little more, but is there broadband any good?

What I really need is something that is unlimited, or has a very high cap. I don't download much, but I'm online 24/7, I do a fair bit of online gaming and my brothers PC is also connected to the same network, I believe he does a fair amount of downloading.

Should I stick with Pipex or am I paying too much for 2mb DSL at £33.99? If you think I should migrate elsewhere, please offer some recommendations.

I think your paying way to much as I'm with Pipex on a 2MB line (soon to be upgraded to 8MB for free due to a contract renewal) and I currently pay £23.44 for uncapped downloads.

Phone them up (if you can get through!) and see what they can do. I think the connectivity with Pipex is excellent - no outages in over 4 years but their customer service is terrible. I asked when my upgrade would happen (promised to me in June) and was told that I was marked for a 'regrade' but they couldn't tell me when it would happen.

Ah! One very important thing I forgot to mention. I really don't want to get tied into another 12 month contract. 1 month, fine. 3 months, fine. But 12 months, nu uh, no siree.

I'm under the impression that if I change to another package with Pipex I'll be entering a new 12 month contract and that's the huge downside there.

Typically it's a 12month contract for new service (I'm looking at this now too), however I'm sure if you rang them and told them you're going to cancel and go somewhere else they would do everything to keep you onboard.

I'll give Pipex a call tomorrow morning. If I can get updated onto one of their new 8mb packages without a 12 month contract I'll be more than happy!

I am with F2S (who sadly are now owned by Pipex), and have been for over 3 years. F2S have simply allowed me to re-grade to higher speed/ lower cost packages, twice for free, and once (last Sring) for a small charge that was quickly recovered by the lower monthly charge.

All done quickly, efficiently, and by simply making a re-grade request (order) from my F2S members page.

Surely Pipex must offer a similar facility?
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

I've been on the blower to Pipex and although they can move me to the Pipex Max package (8mb unlimited with fup for £24.99), they did say it would mean a new 12 month contract. I told them that's a no go and I'd find another ISP.

It's a shame really cause that would have been a simple sollution but I just don't want to be tied into another 12 month contract.

I was in a exactly the same position as you Parm, I wanted to upgraded to Pipex Max but didn't want a new 12 month contract. So I decided to jump ship, and eventually found an ISP that does ADSL MAX and 1 month contracts:

    http://www.idnet.co.uk

Their "Home Max" product is 8mbps / 448kbps at £24.99 a month. However it does have a 30gb monthly cap, more than enough for me, not sure if you're a heavy downloader though Stunning service so far, absolutely no complaints, you'll find a lot of other fans on here as well. Give me a shout if you go with them, I think they would give us both £10 credit to our accounts if I did a "refer a friend" for you.

Pipex have really gone poor lately. The way they treat existing cutomers is dire, not upgrading people to max unless your a new customer, poor cs enand tech support charging after users have left etc be very very careful with the last part ive read a number of stories latley about peole being charged as much as 3 months even after migrating away and pipex have the cheek to say they dont know when it will be fixed. IDNET get good reviews being on line 24/7 say for msn really uses very little bandwidth in the great scheme of things. Look at ISPS like Namesco, Aquiss and New Net. AOL is always is an option unlimited for £30. Namesco dont impose speed caps which is nice. month. Those listed above are all less than 12 month contracts i think im right in saying.

    Permanently confused

I phoned Pipex back to get my MAC code, spent 35 minutes on hold then gave up.

It took me three weeks of chasing to get a MAC, various rubbish excuses, such as computers not working/forgetting my request - not able to provide it over the phone, so would e-mail/post - claimed 7 days, then turned out to be working days, and still didn't provide it.

Chased again, and then discovered that they had raised the MAC a week before, and didn't inform me until I chased.

I know I will need to get another, as the ISP I'm going to needs about a month, not just a couple of weeks.

Having to resurrect an old thread here, but with good reason.

I finally did away with Pipex about 2 months ago, opting to switch to NewNet. Having heard good things about them, I made the switch and everything was going great. I was getting an 8mb connection with a 60Gb monthly limit all for a lovely £22 per month.

Unfortunately for me, NewNet have recently e-mailed me to inform me of their new price plan changes, here's a snippet from their e-mail:
We have seen a tremendous growth in the broadband user base over the past 12 months. As the year has progressed more users consumed more bandwidth than ever before. For a while, customers on LITE and Office services were effectively subsidising users on other services where bandwidth usage has sharply increased. In order to continue offering uncapped and fully open service NewNet are increasing charges on services and also raisng the charges for additional over quota bandwidth purchased in advance or in arrears.
What this means for me is that the £22 plan I'm currently on is switching to £34.95 as of February. Rather a large jump and I'm back at square one.

Therefore I'm again looking for a new ISP. I've no idea where to go now but my requirements are pretty simple, I need an ISP that:
    • Offers ADSL Max (8mb)
    • Has little to no downtime
    • Would allow up to 50Gb monthly usage
    • Doesn't have a Fair Usage Policy
    • Has a minimum contract period of 3 months or less
    • Costs approximately £25 per month

Does anybody have any recommendations? As I'm a Sky TV customer and an Orange mobile phone customer, I was contemplating both of their broadband services as they're available very cheap for existing customers. Unfortunately neither of them seem to have many good customer reviews and with the 12 month contract associated with them both, I don't particularly want to get stuck with a bad service.

It's such hard work finding the right ISP these days!

You might want to look at Eclipse. I use them at uni and back home. My girlfriend also uses them and generally they are pretty good. They have a FUP but as far as I'm concerned that's the same as a monthly usage limit.

At uni I'm paying £18.99 a month and have a monthly limit of 30GB. However, this limit only applies between 6pm and midnight. This effectively means I can download as much as I like at other times.

You do not have to agree to a 12month contract, however, it will mean you have to pay a connection fee. It will also mean that you can't take advantage of any offers they have at the time you connect. Having said this, you could enter a 12month contract, take advantage of the offer and then cancel any time you like incurring a disconnection fee (this is essentially the same as the connection fee).

Hey. Sort of having the same trouble with homecall pipex. But i am getting 8mb through my line with a call package included. The price then isn't so bad. I also find they throttle my line speed at peek times and i do mean THROTTLE, for 8 mb. Also i never seem to get a stable connection with them always jumping around.

One thing you may find is that you are contracted to them for a year so you may find it hard to get out!

    hope this helps abit
