Is there an ISP which doesn't enforce a fair use policy?

I signed up to Demon less than a month ago and my connection has already been throttled. Okay, so I downloaded 14GB yesterday, but, I like downloading stuff. Is there an ISP which won't enforce its FUP? I don't care if I have to pay to cancel, I'm stuck on a 1MB connection now and it's bloody annoying.

Theres a few but not having an FUP usually means having a download cap.

AOL are uncapped not FUP - ie true unlimited at the mo but have just been taken over by Carphone Wharehouse so not sure how long that will stay.

Namesco dont have an FUP but unless you go to max they have a download limit of 5gb on the 1mb service

14gb now that impressive on a 1mb line,

    Permanently confused

14GB is taking the piss a bit - what do you expect? I bet you never even look at/use half the stuff you download.
Not many left with no FUP or cap

    Eye popping good!

if you mainly download off peak hours ie weekend and evenings, then freeola offer 300gb download limit (30gig for peak time) for a total of 330gb/month

14GB aint that bad, considering how big downloads are getting nowadays. If you were to suddenly have the urge to play Desert Combat for BF1942 and had to download all the patches again, that would be over 2Gb I reckon. Then there's all the movie trailers, high def ones are a fair ol' size, an hour or two browsing YouTube or whatever, it all mounts up.

Anyway, my point is that these ISP's advertise t'internet as a whole new media rich world of information and socializing, charge you the Earth then impose restrictive limits. It's utter crap. My mate just got a stern bollocking from his 'unlimited' ISP for downloading Windows updates after a fresh install....

"Between the hours of 5pm-11pm, internet activity should be restricted to web browsing only. Downloads of any kind are prohibited"

So the 'unlimited' part must only apply to people on the dole? Anyway, back to the original question; I've been with Telewest for a good few years now, and can say they're utterly brilliant. If you live in a cable area, get it.

14gb isn't bad, its terrible. I wouldn't settle for anything lower than 30gb a month.

NTL are great, they advertise unlimited with a FUP (No DL limit in there though). I've hit 200gb downloads some months with no problems.

meh some days i download 37GB a day but i mean i pay £69.99 a month to Aquiss internet for the privilage.

Best thing for you to do mate is go for one which has a download cap and pick one that suits your needs. You could get unlimited 8MB from Zen for £89.99 a month

Have had no problem with Ukonlines 8mb service. Try here for a broadband check in your area -

I use to download a load from wannadoo but they sent me a letter saying they would disconnect me if i carried on passed my download limit.

they own bethere... and have a fup on there....

O2 own BE (There) not the CPW last time I checked.

Unfortunantly the UK broadband market is dependent on BT and they charge massively excessive amounts for the use of their backbone.

NTL are reasonably cheap in comparison and are far less restrictive in the use of their network. Unfortunantly however good their network, the rest of the company is a shambles with billing and CS being particularly bad.

Aye as young one said Bt charge a lot for the pipes ISPs need to provide a service.

I work for an ISP and earlier this year we worked out that a 2 meg connection being constantly maxed costs nearly 600 pound to maintain. When you now consider that speeds are up to 8 meg and if the services where uncapped then you can see thats a hell of a lot of money being lost on a line.

Caps a necessary evil at the moment. The problem is however that BT are being forced to make the market competive for cable companies and LLU providors by ofcom. I think the magic number is 1 million LLu and cable DSl connections in the country before BT can start to sell the services how they want again.

BT do get a lot of flack and Seeing as I work with DSL faults I give them a lot each day but a lot of the problems with DSL in this country are caused by OFcom wanting the market to be fairer for LLU and Cable.
