student house lan

Hi all

i'm in a student house at the moment, but i'm struggling to get the lan working correctly, i can see all the computers connected to the lan and they can see mine. The problem is that whenever anyone attempts to access my shared files they get asked for the username and password, is there anyway to bypass or disable that also when i try to access other peoples shared folders i get a message saying i don't have the correct permissions.

So basically i was hoping someone could tell me how to set the network up properly. please ask if anymore info is needed.

When setting the permissions for shares - if you have simple file sharing enabled, just give 'everyone' read permissions.

If you have Simple File sharing disabled (XP Pro mainly) you need to also add NTFS permissions for 'Everyone' - you can give them full read/write access as long as in the share permission you give read only access.

I think its not 'everyone' but 'guest'?

Sometimes enabling the guest account/user on your machine will help.

Everyone gets rid of the prompt, where as guest would still require computer\guest
