    Networking 2 Computers...

    Hi all,

I'm pretty bad at the whole networking thing and I was just looking for some advice on conecting mine and my brothers computers together. I've never bothered before as there was no need but since I fried my HD I need to store things on my brothers computer (I'm using a 40gb one for now). Can anyone tell me how to do this? The tutorials I've found are confusing.

I have ethernet broadband which is hooked up to a 5 port ethernet switch. Both mine and my brothers pcs are plugged into the switch through the motherboards ethernet socket.

I've tried running the network conections wizard and it seems to work but anything I put in the shared folder doesn't register on my brothers.

    Help!
    With love and many thanks,

    Melons

Make sure youre both on the same workgroup, right click my computer and choose properties, computername, and check its the same. you should then be able to see it in my network places.

If that doesnt work, find out his ip address, and open up a command window, type: "net view <ip address>" and then "net use \\<ipaddress>\<name of share>"

my apoligies, i told you the syntax wrong, its:
    net use z: \\<ipaddress>\<sharename>\
that should map your z drive to the area on the other computer. usually doing it once is sufficient to make both computers see each other, but you may have to.

Is the sharename SharedDocs ok? I'm still a bit hazy as to what a sharename is

Edit: The reason I ask is that it comes up with "System error 67 has occurred" "The network name cannot be found".

ah right, in that case, try net view with no arguments and post back what it shows.

    right, in that case, type
    net view \\<brospcname>
then, assuming one of the shares is 'shareddocs'
    net use z: \\<brospcname>\shareddocs

If you go into my computer you should see a z drive which will be connected to your brothers machine.

Thank you so much! Its working! One quick question though. Are the files stored on his computer or mine? I'm guessing they're on his.

on his machine. it should automatically reconnect at log on too. if his machine isnt on at the time this could cause a delay in startup, so you may want to disable the auto-reconnect by right clicking the drive in my computer.
