    Virgin BroadBand

At the moment, im on tiscali..and it sucks.

I have to dial-up an initial connection and it usually doesnt last so long, maybe only a half hour! So, out on the hunt for a new ISP and along comes a Virgin ad.

Apparently, up to 8mbs (only max 4 or 2 mbs up north )connection and free wireless router (ideal as im just about to *attempt* a self build pc for my room upstairs). But, is it any good?

Anyone who knows..comments would be ace, cheers

Not bad. Used them at two houses, found it hard to leave them as the disconnection is harder than set-up. but they are owned by NTL so no suprise there.

Biggest issue is that they dont provide invoices so you cant use for work.

    Otherwise.....pretty good.

Customer Service not bad, have to use a premium dial rate, but then they gave me a different local call rate for follow up calls.

ah right, thats ideal. cheers bud.

I think in the next week or so we'll be giving them a ring to see about moving over! Tiscali are utterly awful, always get through to non-english speaking computer illiterates.

    *yawn*

Yeah Virgin are good - no min contract and very reliable!

I've spoken to there tech support once just to find some static DNS numbers for my router and got thru very quickly to someone who spoke english and answered my query within seconds.

Have a look at this site buddy :
    http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php

It has a list of most uk base ISP's and ratings.

Personally I would go with Newnet as I'm on that at the moment and its fantastic service + Price. Can't go wrong mate .

This may be too late - but avoid Virgin.

I have been on virgin.net for about three years. Service was great to start and I was upgraded to their 8 meg service for free.

Suddenly in October things start to go downhill during peak times to the level that I cannot play online games as my ping is around 200-300.

Having spoken to virgin they say nothing is wrong with my connection - running at around 3.5 meg max and the package I am on was the problem. I am on their top 8 meg package.

They have suggested moving to Plan 2, which is not ADSL Max to resolve the issue but this seems like complete rubbish. This has a 6GB allowance.

I have now found a number of people all with the same issue during peak times.

Virgin refuse to do anything else as they say my connection speed is acceptable and thats it.

    Looking to move to demon.net

I'm on Virgin plan 2, but mine is ADSL max.

However I'm more than happy with the service - I seem to have more issues with speed at the server end than mine, so offpeak downloading is essential for anything truly large.

Customer service has always been fantastic, though you pay for that in the call number charge.

What servers are you getting back pings do? If you can provide IPs I'll test tonight and see what I'm getting.

    Just about any websites really

    www.bbc.co.uk
    www.jolt.co.uk

    all above 200

I'll find some game servers for you to test over the weekend.

It is really strange because prior to October everything was fine - but now really bad.

    Thanks.
