Wireless Conundrum...

Hey Guys,

Got a wireless network atm, with a Belkin 54g Modem/Router - which works all well and good, (most of the time ) apart from for my sister, who seems to only get 40-50% signal, regardless of where we position the antenna that is attached to the PCI card. So, would something with an external aerial help?

The other possibility is something with an Intel based Wireless card, as the one in my laptop has no trouble receiving a signal in her room...

Any suggestions?

so if you put the router next to her comp it still only gets 40-50% signal?

Nah, I had the same wireless card (model, not exact one) in my desktop PC and got 80-90% signal in my room which is the same distance away (just opposite ends of the house, router in the middle downstairs).

Haven't tried putting the router next to her PC - even if it did help it wouldn't be a permanent solution - plus the card is 2 years old now, so no guarantee left I was simply wondering what could be done to improve the signal level, as it only works periodically (which was fine until she started wanting messenger 24x7...)

Pan with a hole in the middle of it, glue a wireless adapter to it?

I did that with a siv when I had no broadband for nearly a month... I just stuck a USB extenstion lead into the siv and plugged the adapter into the lead and I could pick up quite a few connections around the area, he he.

Heh, will take some when I get home, still at work atm.

It does increase the range of the thing, I just stuck it on the window ledge and I could pick up at least 5 or 6 networks.

get a high gain adaptor, i have this one:

which works well, goes from c. 30% strength to nearer 90
