Networking two computers (crossover cable) problems

    hello
i have had a 20m or so cross over cable for ages, and used ages ago to use it with my PS2 online stuff. Now, when i plug it into my main computer, it won't detect it in either slot (on my a7n8x-e mobo). Before, i remember it always used to had a flashing yellow/orange led when i plugged in it.

Is there a way to see if my cable is broken somehow?
ive also got (just came, bought online from another forum) a p2 laptop running 98, and i can't work out if it can detect it or not on there
    thanks

    hello
ok i managed to enable the ethernet device in the 98 box (didnt think to check that!!) BUT, how do i set it up in 98?
i have ICS on, on the xp box, and they have the green lights on next to the crossover cable, and "limited or no connection" on my xp box. But i dont know how to set it up in 98.

Put your xp cd in the 98 rig (when you have 98 running), theres a network setup wizard on there, think its in "other actions" if the cd auto runs. Think theres an option to setup networking where the 98 rig conects to the internet via another computer.

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Setup Wizard on the XP rig and create a small or home office network. On the page You're almost done, insert a blank, formatted floppy disk into the drive, and then click Create a Network Setup Disk. Run floppy on 98 box (making sure that Internet Connection Sharing is NOT running on that box first).
