    FTP Server

What do you need to be able to FTP ??
If I want to have a reserved area on a network folder that users and customers can FTP files to or from, do I need a seperate server, or is there a service that needs to be running? and I am sure I have been given a temp password/id so I can FTP to a folder before, how does that work?

    Cheers

What Os are you running ?

windows can host an FTP server through IIS , but its a pain to admin.

there is good freeware available to run an FTP with.

    I recommend Filezilla.

Either that or BPFTP - one of the easiest to configure/use. Do have to buy it tho...

Well, assuming it will be running on a server, W2K3 Server. But if it can run on a PC on the network, it will be XP.

I use War FTP - free, powerful and works. Set it up 3 years ago and haven't touched it since. Running on W2k3

Even though you can use the Windows FTP functionality of IIS, I'd personally use a 3rd party product ( freeware or otherwise ) as I've found them more configurable and secure. The only reason I'd use a windows one is for AD integration.

might want to concider sftp rather than ftp as it is drastically more secure, on a seperate linux box. with samba to make the files acessable to the windows machines i find this works very well with my server

Cerberus is the best free SFTP server by a mile. Has all the main things you would want out of an FTP server and really easy to use. I switched from Bulletproof FTP to Cerberus and am very happy indeed, the switch took about 5mins.

For a simple setup, I'd also recommend FileZilla. Both as a client and server.

Yeh Cereberus is one of the best options imo.

Setting up an FTP server is very simple. Assuming Windows based machines, you can run one on a desktop/laptop, or a server, it doesn't matter.

    What you need is:

    1) An FTP server - I reccomend Serve-u

which has a free 30 trial of the 'pro' version and then reverts to the personal edition, which is more than capable if you don't need things such as Active directory, database linking etc.

    2) A machine to run it on with a fixed hostname or IP - not a problem if you are just running over a LAN but if you plan to use this over the internet you need a fixed IP or dynamic DNS service.

Then you simply install the server, and configure accounts (anonymous [needs no username or pwd], then your user accounts or groups). You setup your file system (as simple as a single folder, or have upload/download directories) and permissions (eg only allow the account "download" to download and "upload" to upload).

Thats the basics and your off and away..then you can configure clever things like upload/download ratios, FXPing, mirroring etc if you want to. Serv-U and most other big name FTP servers come with detailed tutorials anyway so setting them up isn't hard (eg: http://www.insanitor.com/servu.htm)

Hope thats of some use to you

I had to do this a while back and used WRQ Reflexion ( retail version of open-ssl)

but there's no reason you can't use an open source version.

    quick google gives this...

I am trying to connect to Cerberus - SSL/TLS enabled with Filezilla but no matter which method I use (implicit/explicit TLS/SSH) on Filezilla I get logged in ok but then doesn't display the directory listing. Feel I am almost there but maybe not?

Any idea how to enable listening on non-default FTP ports also in conjunction with Netgear 834?

    TIA
