Remote Desktop Options, please help the newb...

    Hey guys,

First, a quick explaination of what I've got set up currently:-

Machine at home running Win XP Pro SP2, 8mb ADSL Max (runs at 6.5-7.5), Belkin Modem/Router.

Laptop I'm using to connect to them with is running Win XP Pro SP2, with the Unis backbone connection, which can vary throughput wise from around 10kb/sec to well over 200+ (depending on time of day etc..).

Right, so I use LogMeIn Free atm to remote control my PC, but its slow, and I'm wondering if there is anything better. I considered VNC, but I haven't got a clue where to start.

Someone also pointed out Hamachi, but I have yet to try that (made by the same people, but makes you part of that LAN, allowing you to use Remote Desktop included in Windows).

Any security issues with the above? Which would be better at coping with the low/high fluctuation in available bandwidth? Anything I haven't thought of?

    Cheers,

    Dave

I wouldn't use VNC.. I couldn't seem to get the encryption to work so my VNC password was sent by plain text when I tried it for the folks PC since they aren't techies and constantly need support. Eventually someone hacked the PC and I ended up doing a complete re-install to wipe out all the bad stuff on it.

I was under the impression that you could just use Remote Desktop in Win XP Pro by itself.. u just need to forward the correct port to the home PC. Try googling to find it out

you can always use the remote desktop included in windows. VNC uses image compression so it it could save bandwidth.

10KB/s is enough for basic control unless you want to watch movie over the remote desktop.

Check your windows firewall setting and also my computer -> properties -> remote. Should need to forward port 3389 from your router to your pc
