    and

    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/

    and two very good sites.

    and for reference:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adsl
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL_Max
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL2%2B

    ADSL = regular broadband
ADSL MAX = BTs new implimentation fo teh standard that lets your equipment negotiate and connect at the highest rate your line can handle. Hence the Max.
ADSL2+ = completely new technology that squeezes more bandwidth out of the line. although if the line is bad, it will be no better than regular ADSL/ADSL Max. In the UK this is only available through an unbundled service.

    hope this helps

Thanks Funkstar. I use the old adslguide.org.uk thats now thinkbroadband.com but wanted to know what the main differences are. I have a Zoom x5v router and currently have a 1Mb service that is being upgraded to 8Mb - does standard ADSL hardware work with ADSL Max? I know that 2/2+ requires new hardware but can you use old hardware with it and just get a slower speed?

New firmware is normally supplied to work with newer ADSL technologies. Check with the manufacturer's website for firmware updates and what is supported by them.

Yeah your old hardware should work fine with ADSL Max as it is still within the usual ADSL standard, just BT billing it in a different way to ISPs etc.

As suggested though, try and find the newest firmware for your router, can make a huge difference, even to your current connection.

Thanks Funkstar & geezerone - will check out the zoom website and update my firmware. I'll have to put back all the little config changes and firewall bits which is a pain but it may pay off if it performs better!

BTW, can you use standard ADSL hardware on a 2/2+ connection at a slower speed?

Yeah will work ok as it will work upto 2+ speeds.

The configuration may still be held if my Netgear is anything to go by. Backup the configuration anyhow to your PC just in case.

zed, which model of the X5v do you have?

according to the Zoom website there are several X5v's

Looks like only the Model 5654 can handle 2/2+ the other are just basic ADSL.

I think I have the 5565 (Global Village bundled version) - 5654 is just a plain X5 (not the x5v with voip)

No backup facility on the Zoom (or none that I have found)

The firmware page for your router can be found here .

I read that you can't backup your config so take screenshots

You may have to contact zoom as the firmware updates don't say what issues are addressed which seems daft.
