Will my Netgear D834Gv2 work under Vista?

As above; on the netgear site it says no new updates are planned. As such will my modem work under vista or do I have to fork out for that as well (p.s. I think it is b.s. that there are no more updates for a device I bought about 14 months ago)

I had mine set up very easily with vista so I see no reason why yours don't. You probably have to install vista driver for your wireless network adapter but that's about it.

    Network devices are generally OS-independant

yeah, if its connected by ethernet then the above quote applies, in most cases it usually is, but for usb connections you need drivers.

the only network device i've seen that requires OS drivers is the Netgear SC101. Why on earth Netgear could have just built a regular NAS box i have no idea.

I can't imagine any router being OS dependant, that would be pointless.

Of course there is probably software on the "install" CD that might not work, but this will just be the auto discovery and configuration utility. As the device is already set up and working, you won't need it.
