home network how do i set one up

    Hi
There are 4 of us in a house going to share a broadband connection when we get it next week. What hardware do we need for a wired or even wireless network? We already have both a wired and wireless router between us. We are thinking of networking so we can share files, but I'd also like to keep other files private I assume this is possible.

    Thanks

simplest thing to do would be to get a wireless router, and 4 wireless cards for each of your pc's. my friend has a router and an wireless access point and its such a hassle, much better to get an AIO router IMO. only problem i can see is that since its gonna be shared, it will probably be slow because no router that I've seen has bandwidth limiting capabilities. Unless there are such routers with such lovely functions that I dont know of.

I believe a Draytek Vigor 2800G would allow you to set QoS, thus limiting bandwidth

I have that on my Linksys WRT54G, but does it allow you to set the actual bandwidth? or does it let you only set priorities. I can only set priorities and when my sister uploads I still go real slow.

I have a Draytek Vigor 2800G. Setting the QoS option is just one of the options for limiting bandwidth on this router (it has a couple of more suitable options). From the routers' setup screens I can access the following Bandwidth Management options:

    1. Limit number of sessions for a specific IP address or range of IP addresses.

    2. Enable a transmit and receive limit in KB for a specific IP address or range of IP addresses.

    3. Enable QoS.

    I hope that helps.

My Netgear DG834G has Bandwidth Limiting for things such as Steam.

I have had no problems, when 2-3 are on network and surfing/dloading. The router makes sure i have just enough bandwidth to play games online with Steam and get a decent ping.

As STEAM requires Bandwidth more than any of my other games i never get slow down in games.

Back on topic.. He wants to know how to set it up for sharing.

Yes, he should enable File and Printer Sharing in Windows on each PC when he runs the Network Setup Wizard.
